Burlington Community School District
Burlington Community School District (BCSD) is a public school district headquartered in Burlington, Iowa. Entirely in Des Moines County, it serves Burlington and Middletown, as well as residences in the western portion of West Burlington. History School District No. 2 of the Township of Burlington was established on March 29, 1849, when 63% of voters at Congregational Church agreed to create it. The first school built with taxpayer money, with construction in the period 1851–1852, was North Hill School. Burlington is a city in, and the county seat of, Des Moines County, Iowa, United States. The population was 23,982 in the 2020 census, a decline from the 26,839 population in 2000. Burlington is the center of a micropolitan area, which includes West Burlington and Middletown, Iowa, and Gulfport, Illinois. Burlington is the home of Snake Alley, the most crooked street. History Prior to European settlement, the area was neutral territory for the Sac and Fox Native American tribes, who called it Shoquoquon (''Shok-ko-kon''), meaning Flint Hills. The Southeast Conference, formerly known as the Southeast 7, is an athletic conference made up of six high schools in the southeast corner of Iowa. All of the current schools compete at the 3A level, the second-largest in Iowa. History This conference was once known as the Little Six Conference. In 1969 the high schools Bettendorf, Muscatine, and Assumption left the league for conferences that made more geographical sense. Burlington Community High School, or Burlington High School, is a four-year state school, public secondary education, high school located in Burlington, Iowa. The school has an enrollment of 1046 students in grades 9 through 12. It is located at 421 Terrace Street and takes up the entire block on the west side of the street, from Terrace Drive, to Roosevelt Avenue, and north-south, from Division Street, to Johanssen Drive. The current building was completed in 1969, with the first graduating class in 1970, prior to that, the school was located in another two building campus two blocks west of Central Avenue, near the downtown business district.
