Burlington High School (Iowa)
Burlington Community High School, or Burlington High School, is a four-year state school, public secondary education, high school located in Burlington, Iowa. The school has an enrollment of 1046 students in grades 9 through 12. It is located at 421 Terrace Street and takes up the entire block on the west side of the street, from Terrace Drive, to Roosevelt Avenue, and north-south, from Division Street, to Johanssen Drive. The current building was completed in 1969, with the first graduating class in 1970, prior to that, the school was located in another two building campus two blocks west of Central Avenue, near the downtown business district. Until 1983, 9th grade students were enrolled in a separate building, the following school year, ninth grade was integrated into the high school. Burlington is a city in, and the county seat of, Des Moines County, Iowa, United States. The population was 23,982 in the 2020 census, a decline from the 26,839 population in 2000. Burlington is the center of a micropolitan area, which includes West Burlington and Middletown, Iowa, and Gulfport, Illinois. Burlington is the home of Snake Alley, the most crooked street. History Prior to European settlement, the area was neutral territory for the Sac and Fox Native American tribes, who called it Shoquoquon (''Shok-ko-kon''), meaning Flint Hills. Mitch King (born May 5, 1986) is a former American football defensive end. He was signed by the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent in 2009. He played college football at Iowa. Vernon Anthony "Touchdown Tony" Baker (February 16, 1945 – August 9, 1998) was an American professoonal football player who was a running back in the National Football League (NFL). He played from 1968 to 1975, and played for the New Orleans Saints, the Philadelphia Eagles, the Los Angeles Rams, and finally, the San Diego Chargers, and had one Pro Bowl appearance, in 1969. Football career Baker graduated from Burlington Community High School in 1963, earning a scholarship to Iowa State University the following year, where he would graduate in 1966.
