Buffington Township is a township in Indiana County, Pennsylvania, United States. Buffington Township split from Pine Township in 1867 and was named after Judge Joseph Buffington. The population was 1,242 at the 2020 census. It includes the communities of Blaides, Croft, Dilltown, Rexis, Scott Glen, Stumpf's Mills, and Wehrum. Buffington Hotel
The Buffington Hotel is a historic hotel in Westville, Oklahoma, United States. The brick building was built in 1912 and features an arcade of round-arch windows on the East and South facades. The hotel was the premiere hotel in Westville when the town was railway stop. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The hotel has been greatly altered from its original form, including; the southeast breezeway having been bricked off and a room created and the second story bay windows covered in aluminum siding. The owner as of 2014 is a Westville man named Bud Rose. Buffington Island is an island in the Ohio River in Jackson County, West Virginia near the town of Ravenswood, United States, east of Racine, Ohio. During the American Civil War, the Battle of Buffington Island took place on July 19, 1863, just south of the Ohio community of Portland. Buffington Island is protected as part of the Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge. History The Ohio Historical Society maintains a four-acre park adjacent to the island that features a monument about the battle. It also features signs that tell of the events at the battle. Battle Of Buffington Island
The Battle of Buffington Island, also known as the St. Georges Creek Skirmish, was an American Civil War engagement in Meigs County, Ohio, and Jackson County, West Virginia, on July 19, 1863, during Morgan's Raid. The largest battle in Ohio during the war, Buffington Island contributed to the capture of the famed Confederate cavalry raider, Brig. Gen. John H. Morgan, who was seeking to escape Union army pursuers across the Ohio River at a ford opposite Buffington Island. Delayed overnight, Morgan was almost surrounded by Union cavalry the next day, and the resulting battle ended in a Confederate rout, with over half of the 1,930-man Confederate force being captured. General Morgan and some 700 men escaped, but the daring raid finally ended on July 26 with his surrender after the Battle of Salineville. Morgan's Raid was of little military consequence, but it did spread terror among much of the population of southern and eastern Ohio, as well as neighboring Indiana. Background ...
