Buffalo Trace Park
Buffalo Trace Park is a public park preserve in northern Harrison County, Indiana near the town of Palmyra, Indiana. The park is along the edge of the old Buffalo Trace, a historic bison migration trail that was later converted into a road. In 1971, the man-made Lake Coleman was added to the park and stocked with fish, and is maintained by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. The park's amenities include public camping, fishing, a public beach, petting zoo, walking paths, playgrounds, boating, an 18 hole disc golf course and ball courts. The park is owned by Harrison County and managed by the Harrison County Park and Recreation Department. Harrison County is located in the far southern part of the U.S. state of Indiana along the Ohio River. The county was officially established in 1808. Palmyra is a town in Morgan Township, Harrison County, Indiana, United States. The population was 930 at the 2010 census. History Palmyra was originally called Carthage, and under the latter name was laid out in 1836. Because there was already another Carthage in Indiana, the town was renamed Palmyra in 1839 to avoid repetition. The present name most likely is a transfer from the ancient city of Palmyra. Buffalo Trace (road)
The Vincennes Trace was a major trackway running through what are now the American states of Kentucky, Indiana, and Illinois. Originally formed by millions of migrating bison, the Trace crossed the Ohio River near the Falls of the Ohio and continued northwest to the Wabash River, near present-day Vincennes, before it crossed to what became known as Illinois. This buffalo migration route, often 12 to 20 feet wide in places, was well known and used by American Indians. Later European traders and American settlers learned of it, and many used it as an early land route to travel west into Indiana and Illinois. It is considered the most important of the traces to the Illinois country. It was known by various names, including Buffalo Trace, Louisville Trace, Clarksville Trace, and Old Indian Road. Bison are large bovines in the genus ''Bison'' (Greek: "wild ox" (bison)) within the tribe Bovini. Two extant and numerous extinct species are recognised. Of the two surviving species, the American bison, ''B. bison'', found only in North America, is the more numerous.
