Buena Vista Valley
The Buena Vista Valley is an approximately long valley located in central-east Pershing County, Nevada. Unionville, Nevada lies at its northwest, at the foothills of the Humboldt Range. The valley contains the approximately long Buena Vista Lake Bed, a crescent shaped lakebed adjacent the southeast perimeter of the Humboldt Range. Description The Buena Vista Valley is an approximately north–south trending valley, and crescent shaped narrowing both due-north in its north end, and due-southwest in the south. The narrowing in the north is from the perimeter ranges of the Humboldt Range, west and the East Range, east. The valley is at its widest at the north end of the Buena Vista Lake Bed, about 13-mi. The southwest is a region connected to the northwest of the Carson Sink. The narrowing of the valley southwestwards is caused by the Stillwater Range, its north section which turns to trend due-northeast. The Great Basin is the largest area of contiguous endorheic basin, endorheic watersheds, those with no outlets, in North America. Pershing County, Nevada
Pershing County is a county in the U.S. state of Nevada. As of the 2020 census, the population was 6,650. Its county seat is Lovelock. The county was named after army general John J. Pershing (1860–1948). It was formed from Humboldt County in 1919, and the last county to be established in Nevada. The Black Rock Desert, location for the annual Burning Man event, is partially in the county. The county is listed as Nevada Historical Marker 17. The marker is at the courthouse in Lovelock. Unionville, Nevada
Unionville is a small hamlet in Pershing County, Nevada, located south of I-80 and just west of State Route 400 on Unionville Road, with the most recent population estimate being approximately 20 people. The town's best years were during the 1870s, when it was an active mining and prospecting town serving the surrounding hilly region. For a brief time, Samuel Langhorne Clemens lived there and prospected, but left without having had much success. Currently, the hamlet consists of a single business – a tourist inn – and a few small houses clustered along or near the gravel roadway which permits vehicular ingress and egress. The nearest paved road, an extension of this gravel road, is about 7 miles to the east. Humboldt Range
The Humboldt Range is a largely north-south running range of mountains in northwest Nevada, USA, that extend from the town of Imlay in the north to the junction with the West Humboldt Range in the south. It is bordered continuously by Interstate 80 and the Humboldt River, largely expanded in the form of the Rye Patch Reservoir in this area, on the west side and by a long and fairly broad Buena Vista Valley to the east, in a typical basin-and-range pattern. Stillwater Range
The Stillwater Range is a mountain range located in western Nevada in the United States. It is a SSW-NNE running ridge, approximately long. It cuts across the center of Churchill County and extends partway into Pershing County. The Stillwater Range separates the Carson Sink (to the west) from Dixie Valley (to the east). To the north, a low pass separates it from the East Range. To the south, the Sand Springs Pass separates it from the Sand Springs Range. Nestled against the south end of the range is Sand Mountain, an enormous tall sand dune which draws off-road vehicle enthusiasts from across Nevada and California. A series of earthquakes measuring 6.6–7.1 on the Richter Scale, centered beneath or near the Stillwater Range, occurred between July and December 1954. Carson Sink
Carson Sink is a playa in the northeastern portion of the Carson Desert in present-day Nevada, United States of America, that was formerly the terminus of the Carson River. Today the sink is fed by drainage canals of the Truckee-Carson Irrigation District. The southeastern fringe of the sink, where the canals enter, is a wetland of the Central Basin and Range ecoregion. This is mostly included within the Fallon National Wildlife Refuge and the Stillwater Wildlife Management Area. This area serves as an important stopover for migrating waterfowl. Interstate 80 In Nevada
Interstate 80 (I-80) traverses the northern portion of the US state of Nevada.
