Bryan Curtin
Bryan F Curtin (born 4 July 1949) is an Australian former representative rower. He competed in the men's eight event at the 1972 Summer Olympics and the 1975 World Rowing Championships. Club and state rowing Curtin was educated at St Ignatius' College, Riverview in Sydney where he took up rowing. His senior club rowing was from the Sydney University Boat Club and Sydney Rowing Club. At the Australian Rowing Championships in 1970 he contested the men's coxed pair title, placing second in Sydney University colours. At the 1974 Australian Championships he again placed second in that event rowing in Sydney Rowing Club colours. Curtin first made state selection for New South Wales in the senior men's eight of 1971 contesting the King's Cup at the Interstate Regatta within the Australian Rowing Championships. Rowing (sport)
Rowing, sometimes called crew in the United States, is the sport of racing boats using oars. It differs from paddling sports in that rowing oars are attached to the boat using oarlocks, while paddles are not connected to the boat. Rowing is divided into two disciplines: sculling and sweep rowing. In sculling, each rower holds two oars—one in each hand, while in sweep rowing each rower holds one oar with both hands. There are several boat classes in which athletes may compete, ranging from single sculls, occupied by one person, to shells with eight rowers and a coxswain, called eights. There are a wide variety of course types and formats of racing, but most elite and championship level racing is conducted on calm water courses long with several lanes marked using buoys. Melbourne University Boat Club is a rowing club in Melbourne, Australia. Its clubhouse or "boat shed" is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register in 2000. Rowing is the act of propelling a human-powered watercraft using the sweeping motions of oars to displace water and generate reactional propulsion. Rowing is functionally similar to paddling, but rowing requires oars to be mechanically attached to the boat, and the rower drives the oar like a lever, exerting force in the ''same'' direction as the boat's travel; while paddles are completely hand-held and have no attachment to the boat, and are driven like a cantilever, exerting force ''opposite'' to the intended direction of the boat. 1974 World Rowing Championships
The 1974 World Rowing Championships was the fourth World Rowing Championships. It was held from 4 to 8 September 1974 (for men) and from 29 August to 1 September 1974 (for women) on the Rotsee in Lucerne, Switzerland. The event was significantly extended from the 1970 edition, with the addition of both women's and lightweight men's events. Six women boat classes were added, three lightweight men classes, plus quad scull for men, increasing the number of boat classes from seven in 1970 to seventeen in 1974. This was also the last World Championships held on a quadrennial cycle – from this point, World Championships were held annually. Richard Curtin (rower)
Richard Curtin (born 25 August 1951) is an Australian former representative rower. He competed in the men's eight event at the 1972 Summer Olympics and at the 1974 World Rowing Championships. Club and state rowing Curtin was educated at St Ignatius' College, Riverview in Sydney where he took up rowing. His senior club rowing was from the Sydney Rowing Club. Curtin first made state selection for New South Wales in the senior men's eight of 1972 winning the King's Cup at the Interstate Regatta within the Australian Rowing Championships. That entire crew won selection as the Australian eight to compete at the 1972 Munich Olympics. Curtin then competed in New South Wales contesting the King's Cup in 1973 and 1974 rowing to another victory in 1974 from the three seat. Kerry Jelbart
Kerry Peter Jelbart (born 10 March 1944) is an Australian former representative rower. He competed in the men's eight event at the 1972 Summer Olympics and twice at World Rowing Championships. Club, varsity and state rowing Jelbart was educated at Scotch College, Melbourne where he took up rowing. His senior rowing was from the Australian National University Boat Club, the Melbourne University Boat Club and later Monash University. He was a founding member of the Australian National University Boat Club when rowing commenced at that institution in 1964. He was the ANU's inaugural sculling representative at the 1966 Intervarsity Championships and raced again in that event at the 1967 Australian Intervarsity Championships placing second to Sydney University's Dick Reddel. The King's Cup is Australia's blue riband annual rowing race for men. Since 1878 it has been contested by state representative senior heavyweight men's coxed eights at the annual Australian Interstate Regatta. Since 1973 the Australian Interstate Regatta has been conducted on the final day of the week-long annual Australian Rowing Championships. The King's Cup is the final event of the Australian Championships and the Interstate Regatta.
