Brussels So White
The Brussels So White (or #BrusselsSoWhite) movement is an informal movement denouncing the lack of racial diversity in the European Union institutions in Brussels. Origin of the term The hashtag BrusselsSoWhite first appeared in an article by Politico in 2017 written by Ryan Heath. The article featured a collage of the portraits of all of the 751 Members of the European Parliament accompanied by the hashtag BrusselsSoWhite. In May 2022, the podcast EU Scream launched a new series dedicated to the issue of BrusselsSoWhite. The first episode of the series dealt with the question of white feminism in an interview with author Rafia Zakaria. Racial Discrimination
Racial discrimination is any discrimination against any individual on the basis of their skin color, race or ethnic origin.Individuals can discriminate by refusing to do business with, socialize with, or share resources with people of a certain group. Governments can discriminate in a de facto fashion or explicitly in law, for example through policies of racial segregation, disparate enforcement of laws, or disproportionate allocation of resources. Some jurisdictions have anti-discrimination laws which prohibit the government or individuals from discriminating based on race (and sometimes other factors) in various circumstances. EU Scream
EU Scream is a podcast based in Brussels. EU Scream was set up in 2018 by Tom Brookes from the European Climate Foundation and by James Kanter from ''The New York Times''. James Kanter had left the New York Times before the launch of EU Scream. EU Scream's episodes consist of interviews with European politicians, journalists, academics, activists and representatives of the civil society. The interviews often include personal aspects of the life of European politicians, for example the experience of being bullying at school shared on EU Scream by the Vice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans. The Swedish European Commissioner Ylva Johansson when discussing her new immigration policy proposal on EU Scream, explained that the question was personal to her because her sister had been adopted from Korea. Rafia Zakaria is a Pakistani-American attorney, feminist, journalist, and author. Zakaria is a columnist for Dawn. She has written for The Nation, Guardian Books, The New Republic, The Baffler, Boston Review, and Al Jazeera. In 2021, she published a book titled ''Against White Feminism'', in which she critiques the emphasis that conventional feminist thought places on the experiences of white women while excluding women of color. Biography Zakaria was born in Karachi, Pakistan, and was forced into an arranged marriage at 17 to a Pakistani-American man. Zakaria fled from her abusive husband in 2002 when she was 25. Shada Islam is a Brussels-based commentator on Asia and on EU affairs. She is a Belgian citizen. In 2017, ''Politico'' listed Islam among 20 women who are driving Europe’s major political debates. Politico designated Islam as "the ultimate insider outsider." Early life Islam was born in Lahore in Pakistan. She moved to Brussels as a student. Islam graduated in journalism and social communication from the Université libre de Bruxelles. The European Commission (EC) is the executive of the European Union (EU). A hashtag is a metadata tag that is prefaced by the hash (also known as pound or octothorpe) sign, ''#''. On social media, hashtags are used on microblogging and photo-sharing services such as Twitter or Instagram as a form of user-generated tagging that enables cross-referencing of content by topic or theme. Anti-racism In Europe
Anti-racism encompasses a range of ideas and political actions which are meant to counter racial prejudice, systemic racism, and the oppression of specific racial groups. Anti-racism is usually structured around conscious efforts and deliberate actions which are intended to provide equal opportunities for all people on both an individual and a systemic level. European Parliament
The European Parliament (EP) is one of the legislative bodies of the European Union and one of its seven institutions. Together with the Council of the European Union (known as the Council and informally as the Council of Ministers), it adopts European legislation, following a proposal by the European Commission.
