Bross is a patronymic surname of German origin. The Latin name ''Ambrosius'' (of which "Bross" is a reduced form) was popular in early Christian Germany primarily because of the fame of Saint Ambrose of Milan (Aurelius Ambrosius), whose name comes from the Greek Αμβροσιος (''Ambrosios'') which means “immortal” or “divine.” The portion of the etymology of Aμβρόσιος from which Bross comes is βροτός (''Brotos'') which means "mortal." William Bross
William J. Bross (November 4, 1813 – January 27, 1890) was an American politician and publisher originally from the New Jersey–New York–Pennsylvania tri-state area. He was also elected as the 16th Lieutenant Governor of Illinois. He engaged in the lumber trade with his father before attending Williams College. He taught at schools for ten years, then headed west to Chicago, Illinois. He engaged in book-selling and publishing interests before co-founding the successful ''Democratic Press'' paper. Following the organization of the Republican Party in 1854, Bross became a staunch supporter of its political candidates. His support for Abraham Lincoln helped him win support for a bid as Lieutenant Governor. In 1865, he accompanied future Vice President of the United States Schuyler Colfax on a trip west to California, later publishing a book about the excursion. Rebecca Marie Bross (born July 11, 1993) is an American former artistic gymnast and six-time World Championship medalist. Personal life Rebecca Marie Bross is the daughter of Terry Bross and Donna Bross. She has one older brother named Benjamin. She married Billy Burks December 17, 2022. Her parents put her in a gymnastics class at the age of five. She was coached by Valeri Liukin at WOGA Gymnastics in Plano, Texas. Mount Bross is a high mountain summit in the Mosquito Range of the Rocky Mountains of North America. The fourteener is located in Pike National Forest, northwest by north ( bearing 327°) of the Town of Alma in Park County, Colorado, United States. Mount Bross is named in honor of William Bross, who owned property in the area. Geography With a topographic prominence in the range of 292 to 332 feet (89 to 101 m), Mount Bross barely qualifies as an independent peak by the standard 300 foot prominence rule. It is often climbed together with Mount Lincoln and nearby Mount Democrat. On March 9, 1869, Daniel Plummer and Joseph Myers, both of Alma, Colorado, filed claim on the first silver mine on Mount Bross. They named their holding "The Dwight". The adjoining Moose Mine, which Plummer and Myers filed in 1871, became the most productive silver mine in Park County. Stephen Decatur Bross
Stephen A. Decatur (born 1813, died 1888 or 1889), born Stephen Decatur Bross and often referred to as Commodore Decatur, was one of the earliest settlers in Nebraska. He was born and educated in the East, where he became a school teacher and started a family. After having abandoned his wife and two children in New York in the 1840s, Bross moved west to Nebraska Territory. For the rest of his life, he used the name "Stephen Decatur." He was the namesake and one of the incorporators of Decatur, Nebraska, the second-oldest European-American settlement in Nebraska. He gained his nickname of "Commodore Decatur" by claiming to be a nephew of the Naval hero of the War of 1812. Decatur married again in Nebraska. Terrence Paul "Terry" Bross (born March 30, 1966) is a former Major League Baseball pitcher. He bats and throws right-handed. Bross attended St. John's University. A two-sport star, Bross also started at center for the school's basketball team. He helped St. John's to a Big East championship and a Final Four appearance. On the baseball field, Bross anchored the team's pitching staff and helped lead his team to another Big East championship on the diamond.
