Brookside Historic District (Aurora, West Virginia)
Brookside Historic District is a national historic district located at Aurora, Preston County, West Virginia. It encompasses 11 contributing buildings, 1 contributing structure, and 1 contributing site in the small community of Aurora. There are five properties included: Brookside Inn/Gaymont (c. 1895), the Brookside Cottages (c. 1885), Cathedral State Park, Brookside Farm (c. 1895-1905), and the Red Horse Tavern (1825). The community was an important example of a turn-of-the-20th century rural retreat with farm. Owners of the resort took advantage of its location close to the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and created a respite from the city heat for residents of Washington, Baltimore, Cleveland and other cities. Cathedral State Park
Cathedral State Park is the largest virgin timber tract remaining in West Virginia. The park features trees of up to 90 feet in height and 16 feet in circumference. Located on about one mile (1.6 km) east of the town of Aurora and five miles west of Redhouse, Maryland, Cathedral is a mixed forest of predominantly eastern hemlock. Rhine Creek runs through the park. The National Park Service has designated the park as a National Natural Landmark in 1965. Aurora, West Virginia
Aurora is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in southeastern Preston County, West Virginia, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 201. Aurora is located on U.S. Route 50 between the Maryland state line and the town of Rowlesburg. Cathedral State Park is located to the east of Aurora's post office. History Aurora was originally a German settlement. The town was originally called Salem and later Mount Carmel. Its current name was suggested because of the town's high altitude. One of the original settlers to the area was John Stough, a Lutheran minister. The primary industries throughout the early and mid-19th century were farming and timber. In the late 1880s, the town became known as a resort area as the result of several large hotels which were built in the area. Some of these featured casinos, pools, and concert halls. Preston County is a county located in the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2020 Census, the population was 34,216. Its county seat is Kingwood. The county was formed from Monongalia County in 1818 and named for Virginia Governor James Patton Preston. Preston County is part of the Morgantown, WV Metropolitan Statistical Area, and is the southernmost county of the Pittsburgh media market. Gaymont
Gaymont is a historic home located near Aurora, Preston County, West Virginia. It was built about 1896 as a summer resort cottage. It is a two-story, "T"-shaped dwelling constructed of wood, wood shingles, wood half-timbers, and cut stone. It displays eclectic overtones of American Craftsman, Rustic, and Queen Anne architectural styles. It features a low-pitched, cross-gabled, and hipped roof and wraparound, Queen Anne style verandah. Red Horse Tavern
Red Horse Tavern, also known as Brookside Inn and The Old Stone House, is a historic inn and tavern located near Aurora, Preston County, West Virginia. It was built between 1825 and 1827, as a dwelling. In 1841, it opened as a public inn to serve travelers on the Northwestern Turnpike. It is built of rubble stone, and has one large downstairs room and three upstairs rooms with an attic above them. Baltimore And Ohio Railroad
The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was the first common carrier railroad and the oldest railroad in the United States, with its first section opening in 1830. Merchants from Baltimore, which had benefited to some extent from the construction of the National Road early in the century, wanted to do business with settlers crossing the Appalachian Mountains. The railroad faced competition from several existing and proposed enterprises, including the Albany-Schenectady Turnpike, built in 1797, the Erie Canal, which opened in 1825, and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. At first, the B&O was located entirely in the state of Maryland; its original line extending from the port of Baltimore west to Sandy Hook, Maryland, opened in 1834.
