Bronte Cockburn
Bronte Cockburn (born 14 June 1941) is a retired Australian women's basketball player. Biography Cockburn played for the Australia women's national basketball team at the 1957 World Championship held in Brazil. She was only 16 years-old when she travelled with the team to compete in the Championship. Cockburn was captain of the South Australian junior school girls team which won the Australian trophy in 1954. She was named to the All-Australian schoolgirls team the same year. At 13 years-old, Cockburn was already playing top grade women's basketball in Adelaide. Guard (basketball)
In the sport of basketball, there are five players play per team, each assigned to positions. Historically, these players have been assigned, to positions defined by the role they play on the court, from a strategic point of view. The three main positions are guard, forward, and center, with the standard team featuring two guards, two forwards, and a center. The Australian women's national basketball team is nicknamed the Opals, after the brightly coloured gemstone common to the country. The 1957 FIBA World Championship for Women (Portuguese:Campeonato Mundial Feminino da Fiba de 1957) was the second FIBA World Championship for Women basketball championship held by FIBA. In team sport, captain is a title given to a member of the team. The title is frequently honorary, but in some cases the captain may have significant responsibility for strategy and teamwork while the game is in progress on the field. Jack Cockburn
Jack Cockburn (26 December 1911 - 21 September 1990) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and for South Adelaide in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL). Cockburn started his SANFL career with South Adelaide in 1934, having previously played for Blyth as a teenager and young man in the Stanley Football Association, where he won the A. E. Fryar Medal a record three times. He was a member of South Adelaide premiership teams in 1935 and 1938. The 1935 season also saw him win a Magarey Medal for the league's best and fairest player. By the time he retired in 1947 he had played 167 SANFL games and represented South Australia seven times at interstate football. Magarey Medal
The Magarey Medal is an Australian rules football honour awarded annually since 1898 to the fairest and most brilliant player in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL), as judged by field umpires. The award was created by William Ashley Magarey, then chairman of the league. The current recipient is Aaron Young. History William Magarey was born in Adelaide, South Australia. A lawyer by vocation, he had an enduring interest in sports, although he did not play football. He was, however, an active sports administrator who, in 1897, became the inaugural Chairman of the South Australian Football Association (later renamed the SANFL).
