Broken Hills, Nevada
Broken Hills is a ghost town in Mineral County, Nevada. It was primarily the site of the mining operation of miners, Joseph Arthur and James Stratford from 1913 to 1920. The settlement reached the height of popularity during World War I. History Broken Hills was founded by two Englishmen, Joseph Arthur and James Stratford, who discovered silver-lead ore at the site in 1913. A rush of miners to the area in the following six months was halted when it was discovered that Arthur and Stratford had claimed the most promising sites. Broken Hills reached the height of population, with a few hundred residents, from 1915 to 1920. The town had stores, a hotel, saloons and a school. By 1920, both Arthur and Stratford's mining efforts only produced . Arthur and Stratford then sold their claims to George Graham Rice, who promoted the mine and sold shares of property. Most ghost towns in Nevada in the United States of America are former mining boomtowns that were abandoned when the mines closed. Those that weren't set up as mining camps were usually established as locations for mills, or supply points for nearby mining operations. In Clark County settlements along the Colorado River have been submerged underneath the reservoirs of Lake Mead or Lake Mohave. Conditions Ghost towns can include sites in various states of disrepair and abandonment. Some sites no longer have any trace of buildings or civilization, and have reverted to empty land. Mineral County is a county located in the U.S. state of Nevada. As of the 2020 census, the population was 4,554, making it the fourth-least populous county in Nevada. Its county seat is Hawthorne. History Mineral County was carved out of Esmeralda County in 1911 shortly after the county seat of Esmeralda was moved to Goldfield in 1907. Its name came from the surrounding area, which is heavily mineralized. Hawthorne has always been its county seat. The county is listed as Nevada Historical Marker 16. George Graham Rice
George Graham Rice (June 18, 1870 – October 24, 1943) (aka Jacob Herzig) was a convicted stock swindler. He was known as the "Jackal of Wall Street." George Graham Rice was born Jacob Simon Herzig in Manhattan to Simon and Anna Herzig. His father was a furrier. In 1890, Herzig was convicted of stealing from his father's business to finance his gambling habits and spent two years in the Elmira Reformatory. In 1895, Herzig was convicted for forgery and spent four years in Sing Sing, also for stealing from his father's business. He changed his name to George Graham Rice, which he took from another inmate. He then worked as a reporter for the New Orleans Times-Democrat. After that he returned to Manhattan and started Maxim & Gay Co., a racetrack tip sheet. However, it was put out of business by the Post Office Department.
