Broad Run (Occoquan River)
Broad Run is a tributary of the Occoquan River in the U.S. state of Virginia. It rises in Fauquier County and passes through Thoroughfare Gap. A gazetteer from the mid-nineteenth century described it as a small stream, a valuable mill stream. The creek should not be confused with the nearby Broad Run (a tributary of the Potomac River) that flows through Loudoun County, Virginia. Fauquier is a county in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 72,972. The county seat is Warrenton. Fauquier County is in Northern Virginia and is a part of the Washington metropolitan area. History In 1608, the first European to explore in the vicinity, Captain John Smith, reported that the Whonkentia (a subgroup of the Siouan-speaking Manahoac tribe) inhabited the area. The Manahoac were forced out around 1670 by the Iroquois (Seneca), who did not resettle the area. The Conoy camped briefly near The Plains, from 1697 to 1699. The Six Nations ceded the entire region including modern Fauquier to Virginia Colony at the Treaty of Albany, in 1722. Fauquier County was established on May 1, 1759, from Prince William County. It is named for Francis Fauquier, Lieutenant Governor of Virginia at the time, who won the land in a poker game, according to legend. Thoroughfare Gap (Bull Run Mountain)
Thoroughfare Gap is a water gap in the Bull Run Mountains created by Broad Run between High Point Mountain to the north and Bisquit Mountain to the south. It is located on the border of Prince William and Fauquier counties in Virginia. True to its name, the small gap is traversed by Interstate 66, Virginia State Route 55 and the Manassas Gap Railroad. The ruins of historic Beverley Mill are located at the gap. The gap was the site of the 1862 Battle of Thoroughfare Gap during the American Civil War. Broad Run (Loudoun County, Virginia)
Broad Run is a tributary of the Potomac River in Loudoun County, Virginia. The creek, located between Goose Creek and Sugarland Run, principally drains portions of eastern Loudoun County, as well as a small portion of western Fairfax County. The headwaters of the creek are located about northeast of Aldie. The creek flows eastward near Arcola and continues generally northeast to its mouth at the Potomac near the southern end of Seldon's Island to the north of Sterling and about southeast of Leesburg. The watershed of the creek is 67.5 mi2 (175 km2) in Loudoun and 23.8 mi2 (62 km2) in Fairfax. The majority of the run forms the border between the unincorporated areas of Ashburn and Sterling. The Broad Run Magisterial District of Loudoun and Broad Run High School derive their names from the waterway. The Broad Run Bridge and Tollhouse is a national listed historic site.
