Broad Green is a small residential and retail area between Croydon and Thornton Heath in the London Borough of Croydon The London Borough of Croydon () is a London borough in south London, part of Outer London. The area was centred on a triangular green space bounded by shops and houses, which was developed at the end of the 19th century. The main landmark of the area, the Safari Cinema, was demolished in 2005. Most of West Croydon is in Broad Green electoral ward, hence Broad Green library is some distance from the traditional Broad Green area. Croydon North (UK Parliament Constituency)
Croydon North is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2012 by Steve Reed of Labour Co-op. The seat was created in 1918 and split in two in 1955 (taking in neighbouring areas) and re-devised in a wholly different form in 1997. History The seat was created from the former Croydon North West and part of the former North East constituencies. In its previous form it existed from 1918 until 1955. On re-creation at the 1997 general election the MP for the seat became Malcolm Wicks of the Labour Party with the fourth largest Labour majority in Greater London. Wicks was victorious at the next two general elections and died on 29 September 2012, prompting a by-election which was won by Steve Reed of the same party. The 2015 result made the seat the 31st safest of Labour's 232 seats by percentage of majority. Croydon is a large town in south London, England, south of Charing Cross. Part of the London Borough of Croydon, a local government district of Greater London. It is one of the largest commercial districts in Greater London, with an extensive shopping district and night-time economy. The entire town had a population of 192,064 as of 2011, whilst the wider borough had a population of 384,837. Thornton Heath is a district of Greater London, England, within the London Borough of Croydon. It is around north of the town of Croydon, and south of Charing Cross. Prior to the creation of Greater London in 1965, Thornton Heath was in the County Borough of Croydon. History Until the arrival of the railway in 1862, Thornton Heath was focused on an area in the parish of Croydon St John the Baptist, south west of the Whitehorse manor house (now a school), at the locality on the main London–Sussex road known as Thornton Heath Pond. Between the manor house and pond was an isolated farmhouse. Eventually it became the site for the railway station and the main expansion hub. In the 50-year period from 1861 to 1911, Thornton Heath saw a complete transformation from isolated rural outpost to integrated metropolitan suburb. Safari Cinema
Safari Cinema was an entertainment venue at 225 London Road in Broad Green, Croydon. It was opened in 1936, and closed in 2004. The building was demolished in 2005, and was described at the time as "the last of the historic cinemas from the Golden Age left in Croydon". It was previously known as the Savoy (1936-1958), ABC Croydon (1958-1986) and the Cannon (1986-late 1990s). History Opened on March 9, 1936, by Associated British Cinemas, it was designed by William R. Glen and seated 2,300. It was a fair distance from the town centre. Lighting in the large spacious auditorium was entirely indirect, mainly from troughs on the ceiling. On March 31, 1953, an electrical fault resulted in a fire that totally destroyed the auditorium. Post-war building restrictions were still in force and it reopened with a utilitarian appearance on December 27, 1953. In July 1958 it closed to allow a more extensive reconstruction to take place. Broad Green is a ward in the London Borough of Croydon, London in the United Kingdom, covering the West Croydon area. Broad Green locality is divided between this ward and Selhurst ward. The ward extends from central Croydon to the south to the boundary with the London Boroughs of Sutton and Merton by Mitcham Common. It includes part of the retail core of Croydon and the northern part of the Purley Way retail area. The ward returns three councillors every four years.
