British Swimming Championships (50 M) 2008
The British Swimming Championships (50 m) 2008 were held at the Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, Sheffield from 31 March to 6 April 2008. They also doubled as the trials for the Beijing Olympic Games. To qualify for the Olympic team, swimmers had to achieve the FINA A standards in the heats, and finish in the first 2 in the respective final. Three swimmers (Liam Tancock, 100 m backstroke, David Davies 1500 m free, and Kirsty Balfour, 200 m breaststroke) pre-qualified due to their performances in the 2007 World Championships. Ponds Forge International Sports Centre
Ponds Forge International Sports Centre is a leisure complex in Sheffield, England, that contains an Olympic-sized swimming pool with seating for 2,600 spectators, family and children's pools (50 m Competition pool and 25 m diving pit), water slides and other sports facilities. History Ponds Forge was opened in 1991 as a venue for the Summer Universiade, which the city hosted that year. In the 1994 UK Sports Design Awards Ponds Forge was highly commended in the overall category, and for the use of steel in its construction it won the British Steel Award. The name ''Ponds Forge'' is borrowed from the steel works that formerly occupied this site and a high anvil has been left in situ next to the building, partly because it would have been too expensive to move it. Marco Loughran
Marco Antonio Loughran (born 24 March 1989) is an English-born British competitive swimmer who has represented Great Britain at the Olympics and FINA world championships, European Championships and Wales in the Commonwealth Games. He has also competed under Team Europe at Duel in the Pool 2011. Loughran is from Tolworth, a town in Surrey, England. In high school, he was awarded a swimming scholarship to The Southport School in Queensland, Australia. While there, Marco was known as one of the "offshore boys". Caitlin McClatchey
Caitlin McClatchey (born 28 November 1985) is a British former swimmer. Representing Scotland, she won two gold medals at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, in the 200 metres freestyle and 400 metres freestyle. Representing Great Britain, she won bronze medals in the 400 m freestyle at the 2005 World Championships and 2006 European Championships. She has also competed at three Olympic Games and reached the Olympic 200 m freestyle final in 2008 and 2012. She is a former British record holder in the 100 m, 200 m and 400 m Freestyle. She graduated with a politics degree from Loughborough University in 2011. Emma Wilkins
Emma Louise Wilkins (born 1 February 1991) is a British sprint freestyle swimmer. Wilkins represented Great Britain at the 2008 European Short Course Swimming Championships in the 50 m and 100 m freestyle and in the 4×50 m freestyle relay swimming events. She also competed at the 2009 World Aquatics Championships in Rome, swimming in the 50 m freestyle. Katy Sexton
Katy Sexton, MBE (born 21 July 1981) is a former Olympic swimmer from Great Britain. She became the first British swimmer to win a World Championship title, when she won the Women's 200m Back at the 2003 World Championships. She is twice an Olympian and has represented Great Britain in four World Championships, the first in 1998 when she was 16, and in three Commonwealth Games. Francesca Jean Halsall (born 12 April 1990) is a retired English competitive swimmer who has represented Great Britain at the Olympics, FINA world championships, and European championships, and England at the Commonwealth Games. She competed primarily in freestyle and butterfly events. Halsall was the youngest member of the Team England swim squad at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, where she won silver medals in the 4×100-metre freestyle and 4×100-metre medley relays. Euan Dale
Euan Dale (born 18 December 1985) is a Scottish competitive swimmer who has represented Great Britain in the Olympics and Scotland in the Commonwealth Games. At the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, he was a member of the second-place Scottish men's team in the 4×200-metre freestyle relay, for which he won a silver medal. Todd Alexander Cooper (born 25 June 1983) is a former freestyle and butterfly swimmer who competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. Michael Paul Rock (born 13 March 1987) is a British butterfly stroke swimmer. He attended St. Edward's College, Liverpool, from 1998 to 2003. James Gibson, MBE is an English former competitive swimmer and breaststroke who represented Great Britain in the Olympics, FINA world championships and European championships, and England in the Commonwealth Games.
