Walter West (director)
Walter Alabaster West (9 November 1885 – 3 July 1958) was an English people, English film director and Film producer, producer. He was a partner in the film production company Broadwest Films. Early life Walter West was born in Cookham, Berkshire on 11 September 1885. His early silent films, some of which are in the collection of the BFI National Archive, include ''The Merchant of Venice'' (1915). He owned extensive film studios, one of the largest being the glass studios at Walthamstow, London, purchased from Cunard Films. With George Broadbridge (later Lord Broadbridge), he formed the Broadwest Films Company. Films made by Broadwest were not only shown in the UK but exported internationally, including India, New Zealand, Scandinavia and the US. The Blue Lagoon (1923 Film)
''The Blue Lagoon'' is a 1923 silent film adaptation of Henry De Vere Stacpoole's 1908 novel of the same name about children who come of age while stranded on a tropical island. It is the first screen adaptation of the story and was followed by two other adaptations that were released in 1949 and 1980. Plot The story follows the journey of two children, Dick and Emmeline Lestrange, who are shipwrecked on a desert island with an old servant named Paddy Button. Paddy takes care of the children until he discovers a stash of rum, which leads to his death from alcohol poisoning. As the children grow up on the island, they remain ignorant of sex until a chance blow awakens their sexuality. Eventually, they have a child and are discovered by Arthur Lestrange, the guardian of the girl and the parent of the boy, who has been searching for them. Carlyle Blackwell
Carlyle Blackwell (January 20, 1884 – June 17, 1955) was an American silent film actor, director and producer. Early years Blackwell was born in Troy, Pennsylvania. He studied at Cornell University before J. Stewart Blackton discovered him and turned his interest to acting. Career He made his film debut in the 1910 Vitagraph Studios production of ''Uncle Tom's Cabin'' directed by J. Stuart Blackton. Between then and 1930, when talkies ended his acting career, he appeared in more than 180 films. For his contributions to the film industry, Blackwell has a motion pictures star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6340 Hollywood Boulevard. In his later years he was also active as a producer and writer. After his final film in 1930, Blackwell turned to performing on stage in live theatre. Fred LeRoy Granville was born in Warrnambool, Victoria, Australia, in 1896,1917 Motion Picture News Studio Directory and educated in New Zealand. The 1 February 1922, issue of ''American Cinematographer'' stated that he was "a bloody Britisher by birth" and "first saw the light at Worton Hall, Isleworth, Middlesex, England." Granville became interested in photography as a boy. His first experience with cinematography came in 1913 under the guidance of James Crosby at the Selig Polyscope studio in Edendale, near downtown Los Angeles. Granville photographed the documentary Rescue of the Stefansson Expedition (1914) and a number of features and serials for Universal, including '' Liberty, A Daughter of the USA'' (1916) and ''The Heart of Humanity'' (1918). He also shot several of cowboy actor Tom Mix's early Fox features. The last two films he directed were produced in France. George Ridgwell
George Ridgwell (1867–1935) was a British screenwriter and film director of the silent film era. His name was sometimes spelt as George Ridgewell. He was born in Woolwich in 1867. He directed around 70 films including a series of adaptations of Sherlock Holmes stories featuring Eille Norwood as Holmes. His last film was '' Lily of Killarney'' in 1929. He died in Hampstead in 1935. He was the father of the actress Audrey Ridgewell. His early career was as an army musician (sergeant, band of the Coldstream Guards) and on the stage (he created the role of Abdallah in Sullivan's 'Rose of Persia' and was a member of The D'Oyly Carte Touring Opera Company for a season playing lead baritone roles). He also composed light music numbers and lyrics. He was educated at the Royal Military Asylum, later the Duke of York's Royal Military School (a school history is the source of this information.
