Brisbane Tramways Substations
A network of Brisbane tramways substations, supplied from the Brisbane Powerhouse, were developed by Brisbane City Council after they took over the Brisbane Tramways system from Brisbane Tramways Company (BTCo). The new powerhouse and substations were needed, as BTCo had not adequately invested enough into the electricity network to keep the system running efficiently. Brisbane City Council maintained this electricity network from 1927 until 1969, when the decision was made not to have Trams in Brisbane, and the network was shut down and decommissioned. Trams In Brisbane
The Brisbane tramway network served the city of Brisbane, Australia, between 1885 and 1969. It ran on standard gauge track. The electric system was originally energised to 500 volts, and subsequently increased to 600 volts. All tramcars built in Brisbane up to 1938 had an open design. This proved so popular, especially on hot summer nights, that the trams were used as fundraisers and often chartered right up until the last service by social groups. Most trams operated with a two-person crew – a driver (or motorman) and a conductor, who moved about the tram collecting fares and issuing tickets. The exceptions to this arrangement were on the Gardens line (Lower Edward Street) where the short duration of the trip meant it was more effective for passengers to simply drop their fare into a fare box as they entered the tram; and the "one man cars" which operated in the early 1930s (see below). Metro Arts
Metro Arts Theatre is a heritage-listed building, originally a warehouse and then a theatre complex, at 109-117 Edward Street, Brisbane City, Queensland, Australia. It was built in 1890. It has also been known as Community Arts Centre, Coronation House, and Metro Arts Centre. Theatres within the building have included the Edward Street Theatre, also known as New Edward Street Theatre (as part of the Community Arts Centre in the 1980s), while the Sue Benner Theatre, the Basement and the Studio came later. Norman Park is a suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Norman Park had a population of 6,287 people. Geography Norman Park is located by road east of the CBD. Coorparoo is a suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Coorparoo had a population of 16,282 people. Geography Coorparoo is by road south-east of the Brisbane GPO. It borders Camp Hill, Holland Park, Stones Corner, Greenslopes, East Brisbane and Norman Park. Toponymy Coorparoo was chosen as the name of the suburb at a public meeting on 22 March 1875, before which it was known as Four Mile Camp. The name Coorparoo is likely derived from an Aboriginal name for Norman Creek, probably recorded by early surveyors as ''Koolpuroom''. Frank Gibson Costello
Frank Gibson Costello (1903–1987) was an Australian architect. A number of his works are now listed on the Queensland Heritage Register. Early life Frank Costello was born in Sydney on 1 February 1903, the son of Richard and Isabella Costello. He attended North Sydney Boys High School and Sydney Technical College. Career He commenced his career as a cadet draftsman in the New South Wales public service. He became a registered architect in 1927. Between 1928 and 1931, he received a scholarship that allowed him to travel to Britain and Europe where he worked on a number of projects and travelled extensively. On returning to Australia, he worked in Sydney including undertaking teaching at the Sydney Technical College. In 1941, he became the City Architect for the City of Brisbane.
