Frank Gibson Costello
Frank Gibson Costello (1903–1987) was an Australian architect. A number of his works are now listed on the Queensland Heritage Register. Early life Frank Costello was born in Sydney on 1 February 1903, the son of Richard and Isabella Costello. He attended North Sydney Boys High School and Sydney Technical College. Career He commenced his career as a cadet draftsman in the New South Wales public service. He became a registered architect in 1927. Between 1928 and 1931, he received a scholarship that allowed him to travel to Britain and Europe where he worked on a number of projects and travelled extensively. On returning to Australia, he worked in Sydney including undertaking teaching at the Sydney Technical College. In 1941, he became the City Architect for the City of Brisbane. In this role he designed a range of utilitarian structures such as electricity substations, public toilets and bomb shelters (during World War II). Queensland Heritage Register
The Queensland Heritage Register is a heritage register, a statutory list of places in Queensland, Australia that are protected by Queensland legislation, the Queensland Heritage Act 1992. It is maintained by the Queensland Heritage Council. As at 5 April 2020 there are 1790 places on the Queensland Heritage Register, including the Story Bridge in Brisbane and the Ross River Meatworks Chimney in Townsville. Criteria For a place to be entered in the register, it must be nominated and then go through a process of assessment. Queensland University of Technology (QUT) is a public research university located in the urban coastal city of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. QUT is located on two campuses in the Brisbane area viz. Gardens Point and Kelvin Grove. The university in its current form was founded in 1989, when the Queensland Institute of Technology (QIT) was made a university through the ''Queensland University of Technology Act 1988'', with the resulting Queensland University of Technology beginning its operations from January 1989. In 1990, the Brisbane College of Advanced Education merged with QUT. Brisbane Central Business District
Brisbane City is the central suburb and central business district of Brisbane, the state capital of Queensland, Australia. It is colloquially referred to as the "Brisbane CBD" or "the city". It is located on a point on the northern bank of the Brisbane River, historically known as ''Meanjin'', ''Mianjin'' or ''Meeanjin'' in the local Aboriginal Australian dialect. The triangular shaped area is bounded by the median of the Brisbane River to the east, south and west. The point, known at its tip as Gardens Point, slopes upward to the north-west where the city is bounded by parkland and the inner city suburb of Spring Hill to the north. The CBD is bounded to the north-east by the suburb of Fortitude Valley. Howard Smith Wharves
Howard Smith Wharves is a heritage-listed wharf on the Brisbane River at Boundary Street, Brisbane City and Fortitude Valley, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was built from to 1940s circa. It is also known as Brisbane Central Wharves. The site is one of the most culturally and historically significant riverfront locations in Brisbane. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 4 February 1997. In 2009, Brisbane City Council proposed an extensive commercial development of the site that includes hotel, sport and entertainment facilities in new or refurbished old buildings. This plan was rejected by the local community which resulted in a revised plan incorporating greater public space and less commercial development. The revised plan was then rejected by the Queensland Government over concerns with flooding. In 2013, Brisbane City Council again requested proposals from interested parties to redevelop the site. Spring Hill is an inner northern suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Spring Hill had a population of 5,974 people. Bedford Playground is a heritage-listed playground at 8 Love Street, Spring Hill, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Frank Gibson Costello and built from 1927 onwards, one of the builders being Sir Manuel Hornibrook. It is also known as Bedford Park and Spring Hill Playground. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 9 May 1998. History The Bedford Playground was established in 1927 as the third children's playground of the Playground Association of Queensland.
