Breznica pri Žireh (, german: Bresnik) is a small settlement in the hills west of Žiri in the Upper Carniola region of Slovenia. Name Breznica pri Žireh was attested in written sources as ''Brieznitz'' in 1291, ''Nabresnitzi'' in 1453, and ''Wresnitzi'' in 1500. The name of the settlement was changed from ''Breznica'' to ''Breznica pri Žireh'' in 1955. The name is derived from the common noun ''breza'' 'birch'. Like similar toponyms in Slovenia (e.g., ''Brezova, Celje, Brezova, Brezovec, Cirkulane, Brezovec, Brezovci, Puconci, Brezovci''), it originally referred to the local vegetation. Church The small church in the centre of the settlement is a late 15th- to early 16th-century building. The Upper Carniola Statistical Region ( sl, Gorenjska statistična regija) is a statistical region in northwest Slovenia. It is a region with high mountains, including Mount Triglav, and is almost entirely Alpine. A large part of this statistical region is protected as a national park.
