Boksburg, Gauteng
Boksburg is a city on the East Rand of Gauteng province of South Africa. Gold was discovered in Boksburg in 1887. Boksburg was named after the State Secretary of the South African Republic, W. Eduard Bok. The Main Reef Road linked Boksburg to all the other major mining towns on the Witwatersrand and the Angelo Hotel (1887) was used as a staging post. Boksburg is part of the City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, that forms the local government of most of the East Rand. The Mining Commissioner Montague White built a large dam which, empty for years, was dubbed White's Folly until a flash flood in 1889 silenced detractors. The 150,000 square metre dam is now the Boksburg Lake, and is surrounded by lawns, trees, and terraces. 2000–01 Sunshine Tour
The 2000–01 Sunshine Tour, titled as the 2000–01 Vodacom Tour for sponsorship reasons, was the first season of professional golf tournaments since the southern Africa based Sunshine Tour was rebranded. Previously it had been known as the Southern Africa Tour. The Sunshine Tour represents the highest level of competition for male professional golfers in the region. In its first year, the prize money was over 20% lower than the amount awarded the last year of the Africa Tour ( R13.6 Million in 2000–01 vs. R17.5 Million in 1999–2000). The Iscor Newcastle Classic was a golf tournament formerly played on the Sunshine Tour in South Africa. It was first played in the 1980s when the Tour was known as the South African Winter Tour. The 1991 champion was Retief Goosen, who made the Newcastle Classic his first professional win. Goosen would go on to win two U.S. Opens. Johan "Joey" de Beer (born 1 June 1972) is a former professional tennis player from South Africa. Biography De Beer, a doubles specialist from Pretoria, was coached by Kobus Botha. He won a total of four Challenger doubles titles during his career. In 1993 he reached the doubles final of the South African Open, an ATP Tour tournament in Durban, with Marcos Ondruska. He appeared twice in the main draw of a Grand Slam event. He partnered Cristian Brandi at the 1993 US Open, for a first round exit, to 16th seeds Hendrik-Jan Davids and Piet Norval. At the 1994 Australian Open he made the second round with John-Laffnie de Jager. In the opening round, de Beer again faced the 16th seeds, but he and de Jager were victorious in straight sets, over Wayne Ferreira and Javier Sánchez.
