Brenda Myers-Powell
Brenda Jean Myers–Powell (born April 18, 1957) is an American activist and advocate against human trafficking. Myers–Powell, a human trafficking survivor is the co-founder of The Dreamcatcher Foundation, a nonprofit which aims to fight human trafficking in the Chicago area. Biography Myers–Powell was born to a teenage mother and grew up on the west side of Chicago. Her mother died when she was six months old. Myers–Powell was subsequently raised by her alcoholic grandmother. Friends of her grandmother started sexually abusing her when she was four or five years old. Myers–Powell was abducted and forced into prostitution at age 14. By that time she had already given birth to two daughters. Her grandmother told her that she should bring money in. Human Trafficking In The United States
In the United States, human trafficking tends to occur around international travel hubs with large immigrant populations, notably in California, Texas, and Georgia. The U.S. Justice Department estimates that 35,500–170,500 people enter illegally into the country every year. The 2016 Global Slavery Index estimates that, including U.S. citizens and immigrants, 57,700 people worldwide are victims of human trafficking. Those trafficked include young children, teenagers, men, and women and can be domestic citizens or foreign nationals. Under federal law ( 18 USC § 1589), it is a crime to make people work by use of force, coercion, or fear. Dreamcatcher (2015 Film)
''Dreamcatcher'' is a 2015 British-American documentary film directed by Kim Longinotto focusing on Brenda Myers-Powell, a former professional who runs The Dreamcatcher Foundation, a charity which helps women in Chicago leave the sex industry. The film won the World Cinema Directing Award in the documentary category at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. Showtime Networks acquired the rights to the film on 23 January 2015. Production The film's producer Lisa Stevens found the story in 2009 while making ''Crack House USA'' in Chicago, IL. Stevens nurtured the relationship with Brenda Myers-Powell and Stephanie Daniels-Wilson for several years. Stevens began writing and shaping the story of Dreamcatcher for a feature documentary film in 2010. In 2011, Stevens was introduced to Kim Longinotto, and asked her to direct the film.
