Breitenbush Lake
Breitenbush Lake is a water body on a high plateau north of Mount Jefferson in the Cascade Range in the U.S. state of Oregon. The lake, fed by seepage and small creeks, is part of the North Fork Breitenbush River watershed. It is in Marion County near its border with Jefferson County and lies within the Mount Hood National Forest and the Warm Springs Indian Reservation at an elevation of about . Forest Road 4220 runs by the lake. Breitenbush Lake Campground, maintained by the United States Forest Service, has 20 sites and a vault toilet but no garbage service. Canoes are allowed on the lake but not motorboats. The lake, which supports rainbow and brook trout generally ranging in length from , is stocked periodically. The Cascade Range or Cascades is a major mountain range of western North America, extending from southern British Columbia through Washington and Oregon to Northern California. The Trophic State Index (TSI) is a classification system designed to rate water bodies based on the amount of biological productivity they sustain. The North Fork Breitenbush River is a tributary of the Breitenbush River in the U.S. state of Oregon. It begins at Papoose Lakes near Breitenbush Lake in the Cascade Range north of Mount Jefferson and flows generally northwest and west through the Mount Hood National Forest, Olallie Scenic Area, Mount Jefferson Wilderness, and Willamette National Forest. It merges with the South Fork Breitenbush River to form the Breitenbush River main stem slightly upstream of Breitenbush Hot Springs. Jefferson County is one of the 36 counties in the U.S. state of Oregon. At the 2020 census, the population was 24,502. The county seat is Madras. The county is named after Mount Jefferson. History Jefferson County was created on December 12, 1914, from a portion of Crook County. The county owes much of its agricultural prosperity to the railroad, which links Madras with the Columbia River, and was completed in 1911, and to the development of irrigation projects in the late 1930s.
