Brayton Point Power Station
Brayton Point Power Station was a coal-fired power plant located in Somerset, Massachusetts. It was the largest coal-fired generating station in New England, and was the last coal-fired power station in Massachusetts to provide power to the regional grid. It had been owned by the power company Dominion Resources, Dominion Energy New England since 2005, after it was purchased from Pacific Gas and Electric Company, PG&E. The plant was owned from August 2013 to April 2015 by Energy Capital Partners, and is now owned by Dynegy. The plant ceased power generation and went offline on June 1, 2017. Operations The power station began operations in the 1960s and was one of the largest in New England, standing on a 306-acre site. Somerset, Massachusetts
Somerset is a town in Bristol County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 18,303 at the 2020 census. It is the birthplace and hometown of Clifford Milburn Holland (1883–1924), the chief engineer and namesake of the Holland Tunnel in New York City. History Somerset was first settled in 1677 on the Shawomet lands, and was officially incorporated in 1790. It was named for Somerset Square in Boston, which was, in turn, named for the county of Somerset in England. It was once a vital shipping point, and after the War of 1812 it was one of America's chief distribution points. In 1872, it became the site of a major coal port, and in the early 20th century a large cannery existed in the town. This is a list of electricity-generating power stations in the U.S. state of Massachusetts, sortable by type and name. In 2021, Massachusetts had a total summer capacity of 13,002 MW through all of its power plants, and a net generation of 18,214 GWh. The corresponding electrical energy generation mix in 2021 was 76.9% natural gas, 9.2% solar, 5.5% biomass, 4.2% hydroelectric, 4.8% non-biogenic waste, 1.1% wind, and 0.4% petroleum. The state's last remaining nuclear power plant was retired in May 2019. Massachusetts consumes about twice as much electricity as it generates, but is among the lowest electricity consumption states on a per capita basis, as well as on a per dollar of GDP basis.
