Brandi Cossairt
Brandi Michelle Cossairt (born June 29, 1984) is an American chemist specializing in synthetic inorganic and materials chemistry. She is the Lloyd E. and Florence M. West Endowed Professor of Chemistry at University of Washington. Personal life and education Brandi Cossairt was born and raised in Miami, Florida. She began working in the laboratory of Anthony J. Hynes at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science while still in high school. She is a first-generation college graduate, having obtained her B.S. in chemistry from the California Institute of Technology in 2006. During her undergraduate degree, Cossairt worked with Jonas C. Peters on electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution with a cobaloxime complex. Cossairt then pursued a graduate degree in inorganic chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where, under the mentorship of Christopher C. Cummins, she received her PhD in 2010. Quantum Dots
Quantum dots (QDs) are semiconductor particles a few nanometres in size, having optical and electronic properties that differ from those of larger particles as a result of quantum mechanics. They are a central topic in nanotechnology. When the quantum dots are illuminated by UV light, an electron in the quantum dot can be excited to a state of higher energy. In the case of a semiconducting quantum dot, this process corresponds to the transition of an electron from the valence band to the conductance band. The excited electron can drop back into the valence band releasing its energy as light. This light emission ( photoluminescence) is illustrated in the figure on the right. The color of that light depends on the energy difference between the conductance band and the valence band, or the transition between discrete energy states when band structure is no longer a good definition in QDs. Jillian Lee Dempsey
Jillian Lee Dempsey is an American inorganic chemist and the Bowman and Gordon Gray Distinguished Term Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Currently, her work focuses on proton-coupled electron transfer, charge transfer events, and quantum dots. She is the recipient of numerous awards for rising stars of chemistry, including most recently a 2016 Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship and a 2016 Air Force's Young Investigator Research Program (YIP). Education and training Dempsey attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for her undergraduate, earning her S.B. in Chemistry in 2005. She worked with Prof. Daniel G. Nocera on the development of molecular water splitting catalysts. The David and Lucile Packard Foundation is a private foundation that provides grants to not-for-profit organizations. The Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation is a New York City-based foundation founded in 1946 by chemist and investor Camille Dreyfus in honour of his brother, Henry Dreyfus. Solid-state Lighting
Solid-state lighting (SSL) is a type of lighting that uses semiconductor light-emitting diodes (LEDs), organic light-emitting diodes (OLED), or polymer light-emitting diodes (PLED) as sources of illumination rather than electrical filaments, plasma (used in arc lamps such as fluorescent lamps), or gas. Solid state electroluminescence is used in SSL as opposed to incandescent bulbs (which use thermal radiation) or fluorescent tubes.
