A branding iron is used for branding, pressing a heated metal shape against an object or livestock with the intention of leaving an identifying mark. History The history of branding is very much tied to the history of using animals as a commodity. The act of marking livestock with fire-heated marks to identify ownership begins in ancient times with the ancient Egyptians. A fire ship or fireship, used in the days of wooden rowed or sailing ships, was a ship filled with combustibles, or gunpowder deliberately set on fire and steered (or, when possible, allowed to drift) into an enemy fleet, in order to destroy ships, or to create panic and make the enemy break formation. Ships used as fire ships were either warships whose munitions were fully spent in battle, surplus ones which were old and worn out, or inexpensive purpose-built vessels rigged to be set afire, steered toward targets, and abandoned quickly by the crew. Georg Friedrich Brander
Georg Friedrich Brander (* 28. November 1713 in Regensburg; † 1. April 1783 in Augsburg) was an important maker of scientific instruments. Early years Brander was born 1713 to Georg Brandner, an apothecary with roots in Nuremberg, and Sibylla Katharina Brandner (widowed Pfaffreuter, 1678–1756) from a Regensburg goldsmith family. He studied in Altdorf bei Nürnberg from 1731 to 1734 mathematics and physics under the supervision of Johann Gabriel Doppelmayr. Professional work In 1734 he moved to Augsburg (Germany), where he founded a workshop for Precision mechanics, fine mechanics. He was supported by local financier Josef von Halder with capital and in establishing a business network. Brander was the first one in Germany to build a Reflecting telescope, mirror telescope in 1737. Since 1754 the workshop has produced also microscopes, and the high-resolution micrometer glass rulers were its speciality. Gustavus Brander
Gustavus Brander FRS (172021 January 1787), an English naturalist who came from a Swedish family, was born in London in 1720. He was brought up as a merchant, in which capacity he achieved success and became a director of the Bank of England. His leisure time was occupied in scientific pursuits, and at his country residence at Christchurch in Hampshire he became interested in the fossils so abundant in the clays of Hordwell and Barton. A set of these was presented by him to the British Museum, and they were described by Daniel Solander in the beautifully illustrated work entitled ''Fossilia Hantoniensia collecta, et in Musaeo Britannico deposita a Gustavo Brander'' (London, 1766). Brander was elected Fellow of the Royal Society (F.R.S.) in 1754, and he was also a trustee of the British Museum. Jarrod Brander is a professional Australian rules footballer for the Greater Western Sydney Giants, having been initially drafted to the West Coast Eagles. Brander made his debut in round 13, 2018 against the Sydney Swans at the SCG. Brander Craighead (born September 8, 1990) is a former Canadian football offensive lineman who played two seasons for the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He was drafted by the Calgary Stampeders in the first round of the 2013 CFL Draft. Craighead played college football at the University of Texas at El Paso and attended Mother Teresa High School in Nepean, Ontario.
