Brahmaso Humanitarian Aid Organisation ( my, ဗြဟ္မစိုရ် လူမူ့ကူညီရေးအသင်း; abbreviated BHAO) is a humanitarian aid organisation based on Mandalay, Myanmar. The organisation is Myanmar's oldest free funeral service organisation. It was founded by Tikkha, the abbot of the Southern Salin Monastery in 1998, initially providing free funeral services. It has since expanded to providing health care services, as well as education and natural disaster relief services. Mandalay
Mandalay ( or ; ) is the second-largest city in Myanmar, after Yangon. Located on the east bank of the Irrawaddy River, 631km (392 miles) (Road Distance) north of Yangon, the city has a population of 1,225,553 (2014 census). Mandalay was founded in 1857 by King Mindon, replacing Amarapura as the new royal capital of the Konbaung dynasty. It was Burma's final royal capital before the kingdom's annexation by the British Empire in 1885. Under British rule, Mandalay remained commercially and culturally important despite the rise of Yangon, the new capital of British Burma. The city suffered extensive destruction during the Japanese conquest of Burma in the Second World War. In 1948, Mandalay became part of the newly independent Union of Burma. Salin Monastery ( my, စလင်းကျောင်း) is a royal Buddhist monastery in Mandalay, Burma, known for its indigenous wooden carvings. The monastery was built under the patronage of the Salin Princess. The Free Funeral Service Society (Yangon) ( my, နာရေးကူညီမှုအသင်း, abbreviated FFSS), a civil society organisation based on Yangon, Myanmar, founded by Burmese film director Thukha, provides free funeral services to people from any religion, race and socioeconomic status at no cost in Yangon Region. It was founded on 1 January 2001 by film director Thukha and is headed by many prominent persons in the entertainment industry, including actor Kyaw Thu. FFSS has helped fund around 200,000 funerals since it first started. In 2006, FFSS opened a free health care clinic called Thukha Clinic.
