Box Set
A box set or (its original name) boxed set is a set of items (for example, a compilation of books, musical recordings, films or television programs) traditionally packaged in a box and offered for sale as a single unit. Music Artists and bands with an extremely long and successful career often have anthology or "essential" collections of their boxes of music released as box sets. These often include rare and never-before-released tracks. Some box sets collect previously released boxes of singles or albums by a music artist, and often collect the complete discography of an artist such as Pink Floyd's ''Oh, by the Way'' and ''Discovery'' sets. Sometimes bands release expanded versions of their most successful albums such as Pink Floyd's ''Immersion'' box set versions of their ''The Dark Side of the Moon'' (1973), ''Wish You Were Here'' (1975) and ''The Wall'' (1979) albums. Pink Floyd have also released ''The Early Years 1965–1972'' box set which features mostly unreleased mate ...

Compact Disc
The compact disc (CD) is a Digital media, digital optical disc data storage format that was co-developed by Philips and Sony to store and play digital audio recordings. In August 1982, the first compact disc was manufactured. It was then released in October 1982 in Japan and branded as ''Compact Disc Digital Audio, Digital Audio Compact Disc''. The format was later adapted (as CD-ROM) for general-purpose data storage. Several other formats were further derived, including write-once audio and data storage (CD-R), rewritable media (CD-RW), Video CD (VCD), Super Video CD (SVCD), Photo CD, Picture CD, Compact Disc-Interactive (CD-i) and Enhanced Music CD. Standard CDs have a diameter of and are designed to hold up to 74 minutes of uncompressed stereo digital audio or about 650 mebibyte, MiB of data. Capacity is routinely extended to 80 minutes and 700 mebibyte, MiB by arranging data more closely on the same sized disc. The Mini CD has various diameters ranging from ; t ...

Vampire On Titus
''Vampire on Titus'' is the sixth studio album by American indie rock band Guided by Voices. Background ''Vampire on Titus'' was recorded after a short-lived dissolution of the band (after 1992's "farewell" album ''Propeller'') but prior to the full-time regrouping that occurred with the assemblage of the ''Bee Thousand'' album and the band's return to live performance. The album was recorded with a skeletal line-up consisting of Robert Pollard, Jim Pollard and Tobin Sprout. Jim Shepard of V-3 remarked to Pollard once that he “was like a vampire on Titus, sucking songs out of the earth.” Pollard lived on Titus Ave. in Dayton, Ohio. The album is often acknowledged as being the most abrasively lo-fi in the entire Guided by Voices catalog. Track listing All songs written by Robert Pollard unless otherwise noted. Side A # ""Wished I Was a Giant"" – 2:43 # "#2 in the Model Home Series" (R. Pollard, Tobin Sprout) – 1:45 # "Expecting Brainchild" (Jim Pollard, R. Pollard) – 2 ...

Propeller (Guided By Voices Album)
''Propeller'' is the fifth album by American indie rock band Guided by Voices. Background Conceived initially by Robert Pollard as a farewell album in the face of years of obscurity and mounting debt, the album ended up "propelling" the band to a higher-profile status and influence, affording a lasting position in the indie rock canon. While significant portions were recorded in a professional recording studio (though later to be "lovingly fucked with" by Mike "Rep" Hummel, of Mike Rep and the Quotas), the album is notable for being the first of the band's albums to make extensive use of 4-track cassette and lo-fi recording techniques as an aesthetic unto itself. Songs are frequently punctuated by unexpected blasts of noise, awkward tape edits, sped-up or slowed-down vocal or instrumental parts, and other sonic bric-a-brac. An interesting result of this technique is the intro to the album's opening track, "Over the Neptune/Mesh Gear Fox". What appears to be the sound of a ba ...

Same Place The Fly Got Smashed
''Same Place the Fly Got Smashed'' is the fourth album by American indie rock band Guided by Voices. In James Greer's book, ''Guided by Voices: A Brief History: Twenty-One Years of Hunting Accidents in the Forests of Rock and Roll'', band leader Robert Pollard cites this album as having some of his best songs, describing "Pendulum" as "my favorite lyrics I've ever written." Lyrics and music The sample "You brought me down, you and your family. I did not!" used at the beginning of "Airshow '88" came from the movie ''Shattered Dreams''. The made-for-TV movie came out in 1990, which starred Lindsay Wagner. Frontman Robert Pollard describes the release as "a concept album itha linear story" about an alcoholic who commits a murder and is eventually executed for his crime. Same Place the Fly Got Smashed continues the beginning of the band's lo-fi era, featuring a production value markedly less crisp and clear than their previous releases. Track listing All songs written by Jim Po ...

Self Inflicted Aerial Nostalgia
''Self-Inflicted Aerial Nostalgia'' is the third album by American indie rock band Guided by Voices. It is considered to be the first album in the group's discography to have their signature sound which was achieved by using low fidelity recording techniques. It is the only album to feature drummer Bruce Smith. Background After the group's previous releases failed commercially, the band's budget towards production began to shrink considerably. 500 original copies were pressed that were funded by the band, similar to previous releases. Recording The album was recorded at Steve Wilbur's home using an 8-track recorder. Track listing #"The Future Is in Eggs" (M. Mitchell/J. Pollard/R. Pollard) – 3:29 #"The Great Blake St. Canoe Race" (R. Pollard) – 2:54 #"Slopes of Big Ugly" (R. Pollard) – 2:06 #"Paper Girl" (R. Pollard) – 2:16 #"Navigating Flood Regions" (R. Sandbox (Guided By Voices Album)
''Sandbox'' is the second studio album from American indie rock band Guided by Voices. Reception Editors at AllMusic rated this album 2 out of 5 stars, with critic Brian Egan writing that the band "took a short step back" from their previous album and that the songs "ultimately fail to register". Byron Coley of ''Spin'' pointed to the work on ''Sandbox'' to declare that Guided by Voices is "one of the sharpest sounding angle-pop bands out of the Midwest since the days of Green". In that publication's 1995 album guide, they rated ''Sandbox'' a 1 out of 5, stating that the band deviated from their lo-fi music roots after performing with R.E.M. Frontman Robert Pollard called this album "an attempt to make a huge power-pop record for less than a thousand dollars" in 1995 and journalist David Sprague reported that this album was painful for him to listen to. Track listing #"Lips of Steel" (Kevin Fennell, Mitch Mitchell, and Jim Pollard) – 1:34 #"A Visit to the Creep Doctor" ...

Devil Between My Toes
''Devil Between My Toes'' is the debut studio album by American indie rock band Guided by Voices. Background After consistently receiving lukewarm reception from Dayton locals and poor sales of their first release, 1986's Forever Since Breakfast, GbV had stopped playing live and dedicated themselves to be a studio band only. This would be the first of multiple GbV releases (until Vampire on Titus) produced by Steve Wilbur in his 8-track studio. With the exception of "Crux", "3 Year Old Man", "A Proud And Booming Industry", "Artboat", and "Bread Alone", which were recorded in R. Pollard's basement, all songs were recorded with Wilbur. The album was self-financed and only 300 original pressings were released. The cover art was initially supposed to be a painting done by a high school friend's of Pollard depicting a "colonial-era cockfight" that would be redone to include “bikers and businessmen and shit”, but when the friend could not be located, the band instead used an ...

Gramophone Record
A phonograph record (also known as a gramophone record, especially in British English), or simply a record, is an analog sound storage medium in the form of a flat disc with an inscribed, modulated spiral groove. The groove usually starts near the periphery and ends near the center of the disc. At first, the discs were commonly made from shellac, with earlier records having a fine abrasive filler mixed in. Starting in the 1940s polyvinyl chloride became common, hence the name vinyl. The phonograph record was the primary medium used for music reproduction throughout the 20th century. It had co-existed with the phonograph cylinder from the late 1880s and had effectively superseded it by around 1912. Records retained the largest market share even when new formats such as the compact cassette were mass-marketed. By the 1980s, digital media, in the form of the compact disc, had gained a larger market share, and the record left the mainstream in 1991. Since the 1990s, records con ...

Failed Experiments And Trashed Aircraft
Failure is the state or condition of not meeting a desirable or intended objective, and may be viewed as the opposite of success. The criteria for failure depends on context, and may be relative to a particular observer or belief system. One person might consider a failure what another person considers a success, particularly in cases of direct competition or a zero-sum game. Similarly, the degree of success or failure in a situation may be differently viewed by distinct observers or participants, such that a situation that one considers to be a failure, another might consider to be a success, a qualified success or a neutral situation. It may also be difficult or impossible to ascertain whether a situation meets criteria for failure or success due to ambiguous or ill-defined definition of those criteria. Finding useful and effective criteria, or heuristics, to judge the success or failure of a situation may itself be a significant task. In American history Cultural histori ...
