Boutaiba Sghir
Boutaiba Sghir (born June 4, 1945) is an Algerian raï singer and songwriter. Biography In 1963, he released his first single, at 18, Chetek el Berah. In 1963, he gave his first concert "Scène d'été" in Chaabet El Ham and Aïn Témouchent. His first success came in 1968 with the single ''El Caoucaou''. Then he was a violinist for the orchestra of Oran radio from 1967 to 1969. In 1969, ''Raba Raba'' and ''El Fermliya'' are released and are still appreciated to this day by the public. Like a lot of raï artists of his generation, he began his raï singer career at the end of 60s with Melhoun Bedoui music (also called old raï) With Boussouar El Maghnaoui, Bouteldja Belkacem and the musician Gana El Maghnaoui, he was one of the fathers of modern raï (also called pop Bedoui or pop raï). Cheba Zahouania ( ar, الشابة الزهوانية) (also spelled Chaba), born Halima Mazzi ( ar, حليمة مازي) (born May 15, 1959) is Moroccan & Algerian singer known for raï music. She has lived in France since her singing partner, Cheb Hasni, was murdered in 1994. Biography Halima Mazzi was born in Oran, Algeria from a Moroccan father and an Algerian mother, in 1959. Under the name Chaba Zahouania, she became a popular singer of raï, a hybrid folk-music style. In 1986, five years after the start of her career, she achieved recognition with her performance of "Khâli ya khâli" (''My uncle, oh, my uncle'') with Cheb Hamid. During the summer of 1987, Zahouania recorded "Beraka" ("The Shack"), with Cheb Hasni, which was considered provocative by Algerian standards, which got them attention. Cheb Sahraoui (born Mohamed Sahraoui, Tlemcen, Algeria, 1 April 1961) is an Algerian raï musician, the first to tour North America and the first to incorporate electronic synthesizers into his arrangements. Early life As a pianist, he studied music at the conservatory of music in Oran, and launched his musical career by singing raï classics and Beatles tunes in the city's nightclubs. Cheb Hasni
Cheb Hasni ( ar, الشاب حسني), born Hasni Chakroun ( ar, حسني شقرون), (1 February 1968 – 29 September 1994), was an Algerian raï singer. He was popular across the Maghreb, having reached the height of his career in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He was the son of a welder and grew up in a working-class family where he was one of seven children. Hasni is most well known for his love songs, but he also dealt with taboo subjects such as divorce, romance and alcohol. He was murdered in 1994. Hasni's controversial lyrical content (particularly those on the 1987 hit song "El Baraka", which contained lyrics about drunken sexual intercourse) had drawn the ire of fanatic Islamist fundamentalists in Algeria and it is believed he was murdered as a result. Cheb (; german: Eger) is a town in the Karlovy Vary Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 30,000 inhabitants. It lies on the river Ohře. Messaoud Bellemou ( ar, مسعود بلمو) is an Algerian musician and one of the most influential performers of modern raï music. He is considered by some people like one of the fathers of Modern Raï Music.
