Boulevard theatre is a theatrical aesthetic that emerged from the boulevards of Paris' old city.Brunet, Brigitte"Le Théâtre de Boulevard".''French Studies'' 59: 417–418, July 2005 Origin Starting from the second half of the 18th century, popular and bourgeois theatre alike took up residence on the boulevard du Temple, then nicknamed 'boulevard du Crime' due to the many melodramas and murder stories shown there. In addition to the many attractions on display there – fireworks, pantomime, acrobats, etc. – a so-called 'boulevard' repertoire emerged separate from upper-class theatre. Then, starting from the Second French Empire, vaudeville theatre and comédie d'intrigue arrived on the scene. Style Boulevard theatre consists mostly of comedies but also dramas. A boulevard is a type of broad avenue (landscape), avenue planted with rows of trees, or in parts of North America, any urban highway. Boulevards were originally circumferential roads following the line of former defensive wall, city walls. In American usage, boulevards may be wide, multi-lane arterial thoroughfares, often divided with a central median, and perhaps with side-streets along each side designed as slow travel and parking lanes and for bicycle and pedestrian usage, often with an above-average quality of landscaping and scenery. Etymology The word ''boulevard'' is borrowed from French. In French, it originally meant the flat surface of a rampart (fortification), rampart, and later a promenade taking the place of a demolished fortification. Pierre Barillet
Pierre Barillet (24 August 1923 – 8 January 2019) was a French playwright. Biography Barillet was born in Paris, France. Passionate about theatre since childhood, he wrote his first play, ''Les Héritiers'', in 1945 after being a law student. It was followed by ''Les Amants de Noël'', performed at the Théâtre de Poche. He also worked as a radio broadcaster, reading novels and plays with Agnès Capri. He first experienced success in 1951 with ''Le Don d'Adèle'', which he wrote along with Jean-Pierre Gredy. The play was performed over a thousand times. Over the next several decades, Barillet would develop what he was most famous for, Boulevard theatre. Certain of his plays were adapted to Broadway, including ''Fleur de cactus'' ('' Cactus Flower'', written by Abe Burrows) and ''Quarante carats'' (''Forty Carats''). Alexandre Bisson
Alexandre Bisson (9 April 1848 – 27 January 1912) was a French playwright, vaudeville creator, and novelist. Born in Briouze, Orne in Lower Normandy, he was successful in his native France as well as in the United States. Remembered as a significant creator of Parisian vaudeville, in collaboration with Edmond Gondinet, Bisson's 1881 three-act comedy ''Un Voyage d'agrément'' was performed at the Théâtre du Vaudeville in Paris. Paul Bilhaud (31 December 1854 – 8 January 1933) was a French playwright and librettist. An old friend of the author Alphonse Allais, he is remembered along his friend as a forerunner of minimalism with his painting ''Combat de nègres pendant la nuit'' ("(Battle of negroes during the night"), displayed for the first time in 1882, more than thirty years before the « ''Black Square'' » by Kazimir Malevich. Henri-Léon-Gustave-Charles Bernstein (20 June 1876 – 27 November 1953) was a French playwright associated with Boulevard theatre. Biography Bernstein was born in Paris. His earliest plays, including ''La Rafale'' (1905), ''Le Voleur'' (1907), ''Samson'' (1908), ''Israël'' (1908), and ''Le Secret'' (1913), are written in a realistic style and powerfully depict harsh realities of modern life and society.
