Boston School (painting)
The Boston School was a group of Boston-based painters active in the first three decades of the twentieth century. Often classified as American Impressionists, they had their own regional style, combining the painterliness of Impressionism with a more conservative approach to figure painting and a marked respect for the traditions of Western art history. Their preferred subject matter was genteel: portraits, picturesque landscapes, and young women posing in well-appointed interiors. Major influences included John Singer Sargent, Claude Monet, and Jan Vermeer. Key figures in the Boston School were Edmund C. Tarbell, Frank Weston Benson, and William McGregor Paxton, all of whom trained in Paris at the Académie Julian and later taught at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. Pierre-Auguste Renoir (; 25 February 1841 – 3 December 1919) was a French artist who was a leading painter in the development of the Impressionist style. As a celebrator of beauty and especially feminine sensuality, it has been said that "Renoir is the final representative of a tradition which runs directly from Rubens to Watteau." Bela Pratt
Bela Lyon Pratt (December 11, 1867 – May 18, 1917) was an American sculptor from Connecticut. Life Pratt was born in Norwich, Connecticut, to Sarah (Whittlesey) and George Pratt, a Yale-educated lawyer. His maternal grandfather, Oramel Whittlesey, was a pianoforte maker and founder in 1835 of Music Vale Seminary in Salem, Connecticut, the first music school in the country authorized to confer degrees to teach music. At 16, Pratt began studying at the Yale University School of Fine Arts, where his teachers included John Henry Niemeyer (1839–1932) and John Ferguson Weir (1841–1926). Emil Otto Grundmann
Professor Emil Otto Grundmann (1844 in Meissen – 27 August 1890 in Dresden), was a German painter who studied in Antwerp under Baron Hendrik Leys, and in Düsseldorf before moving to America where he became a noted painter. He was the first Director of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, an appointment in which Francis Davis Millet, an old Antwerp friend, was instrumental. One of his colleagues at the Museum was Joseph DeCamp. Many notable American artists attended his classes and were influenced by his European ideas. Elizabeth Okie Paxton
Elizabeth Okie Paxton (1878–1972) was an American painter, married to another artist William McGregor Paxton (1869–1941). The Paxtons were part of the Boston School, a prominent group of artists known for works of beautiful interiors, landscapes, and portraits of their wealthy patrons. Her paintings were widely exhibited and sold well. Lilla Cabot Perry (born Lydia Cabot; January 13, 1848 – February 28, 1933) was an American artist who worked in the American Impressionist style, rendering portraits and landscapes in the free form manner of her mentor, Claude Monet. Perry was an early advocate of the French Impressionist style and contributed to its reception in the United States. Perry's early work was shaped by her exposure to the Boston School of artists and her travels in Europe and Japan. She was also greatly influenced by Ralph Waldo Emerson's philosophies and her friendship with Camille Pissarro. Frederic Porter Vinton
Frederic Porter Vinton (January 29, 1846 – May 19, 1911), sometimes spelled "Frederick", was an American portrait painter. Life He was born in Bangor, Maine. He grew up in Chicago, and moved to Boston in 1861 For twenty years he worked as a bookkeeper, during which he studied art under William Rimmer at the Lowell Institute. Soon after studying at the Institute, he wrote an art review for the ''Boston Advertiser''. He opened a portrait studio in Boston in 1878. Aldro Thompson Hibbard (August 25, 1886 – November 12, 1972) was an American plein air painter known for his depictions of snowy landscapes, particularly of Vermont. Hibbard worked in oil, as watercolor couldn't be used in January and February in the mountains of Vermont. He lived most of his life in Rockport, Massachusetts. Early life Hibbard was born in Falmouth, Massachusetts to James Thompson Hibbard and to the former Katherine Swift. Gretchen Woodman Rogers
Gretchen Woodman Rogers (1881–1967) was an American painter associated with the Boston School. Life and career Gretchen Woodman Rogers was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1881. From 1900 to 1907 she studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts under Edmund C. Tarbell, winning several awards while still a student. Tarbell once called her "the best pupil I ever had...a genius." Rogers was a highly regarded painter in her day. John Joseph Enneking
John Joseph Enneking (October 4, 1841 – November 16, 1916) was an American Impressionist painter associated with the Boston School. Biography Enneking was born of German ancestry in Minster, Ohio. He was educated at Mount St. Mary's College, Cincinnati, served in the American Civil War in 1861-1862, studied art in New York and Boston, and gave it up because his eyes were weak, only to return to it after failing in the manufacture of tinware. From 1873 to 1876 he studied in Munich under Schleich and Leier, and in Paris under Daubigny and Bonnat; and in 1878-1879 he studied in Paris again and sketched in the Netherlands. Lilian Westcott Hale
Lilian Westcott Hale (December 7, 1880 in Bridgeport, Connecticut – November 3, 1963 in Saint Paul, Minnesota) was an American Impressionist painter. Biography According to the 1880 original Bridgeport archival records at the Connecticut State Library, the 1900 Federal Census, and her grave site, she was born on December 7, 1880, as Lillie Coleman Westcott to Edward Gardiner Westcott and Harriet Clarke. Her father was the President of the Bridgeport Sharp's Rifle C. in the late 1870s and was its treasurer in 1880. He would later become the treasurer of the Bridgeport Lee Arms Co.
