Emil Otto Grundmann
Professor Emil Otto Grundmann (1844 in Meissen – 27 August 1890 in Dresden), was a German painter who studied in Antwerp under Baron Hendrik Leys, and in Düsseldorf before moving to America where he became a noted painter. He was the first Director of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, an appointment in which Francis Davis Millet, an old Antwerp friend, was instrumental. One of his colleagues at the Museum was Joseph DeCamp. Many notable American artists attended his classes and were influenced by his European ideas. Some students who later became prominent were Edmund C. Tarbell, Edward Clark Potter, Robert Reid, Ernest Fenollosa, Frank Weston Benson and Charles Henry Turner. Ernest Fenollosa
Ernest Francisco Fenollosa (February 18, 1853 – September 21, 1908) was an American art historian of Japanese art, professor of philosophy and political economy at Tokyo Imperial University. An important educator during the modernization of Japan during the Meiji Era, Fenollosa was an enthusiastic Orientalist who did much to preserve traditional Japanese art. Biography Fenollosa was born in 1853 as the son of Manuel Francisco Ciriaco Fenollosa, a Spanish pianist born in Málaga in 1818, and Mary Silsbee, a member of a prominent family in Boston. He attended public schools in his hometown of Salem, Massachusetts before studying philosophy and sociology at Harvard College, where he graduated in 1874. He studied for a year at the art school of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, during which time he married Elizabeth Goodhue Millett. Charles Henry Turner (painter)
Charles Henry Francis Turner (7 August 1848 – 24 November 1908) was an American watercolourist and oil painter of landscapes, portraits, illustrations, and genre scenes, who from 1877 studied with Otto Grundmann (1844–1890), founder of the " Boston School", at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School. Turner was a member of the Unity Art Club and the Boston Art Club, of which he later became president. Turner was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts, but lived and worked in Jackson, New Hampshire and Boston, Massachusetts and exhibited in Boston, Philadelphia, and New York. In the 1880s he spent some time studying and working in Europe, later joining the White Mountain School of painting. Turner produced some fine, detailed pyrographic artworks. On his trip to the Continent, he was inspired by European and French master paintings and portraits. Frank Weston Benson
Frank Weston Benson, frequently referred to as Frank W. Benson, (March 24, 1862 – November 15, 1951) was an American artist from Salem, Massachusetts known for his Realism (arts), Realistic portraits, American Impressionism, American Impressionist paintings, watercolors and etchings. He began his career painting portraits of distinguished families and murals for the Library of Congress. Some of his best known paintings (''Eleanor'', Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; ''Summer'', Rhode Island School of Design Museum) depict his daughters outdoors at Benson's summer home, Wooster Farm, on the island of North Haven, Maine. Robert Reid (painter)
Robert Lewis Reid (July 29, 1862 – December 2, 1929) was an American Impressionist painter and muralist. His work tended to be very decorative, much of it centered on depiction of young women set among flowers. He later became known for his murals and designs in stained glass. Life and work Robert Reid was born in Stockbridge, Massachusetts and attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston under Otto Grundmann, where he was later an instructor. In 1884 he moved to New York City, studying at the Art Students League of New York, Art Students League, and in 1885 he went to Paris to study at the Académie Julian under Gustave Boulanger and Jules Joseph Lefebvre.
