Suriname is divided into 10 districts ( nl, districten). Saramacca District
Saramacca is a district of Suriname, in the north. Saramacca's capital city is Groningen, with other towns and cities including Batavia, Kampong Baroe, Uitkijk, Maho and Boskamp. Saramacca has a population of 17,480 and an area of 3,636 km2. Saramaka is also the name of a group of Maroons who established communities along the Saramacca River having fled slavery. History The district was founded in 1983, but the history dates back to 1790 when the first plantation was opened. Until 1936, Saramacca could only be access by boat, but with the construction of a road to Paramaribo, which is now part of the East-West Link, Saramacca was removed for its isolation. In 1982, oil was discovered in Sarammacca which boosted its economy. On 13 December 2014, Staatsolie opened an oil refinery. Resorts Of Suriname
The ten districts of Suriname are divided into 63 resorts (Dutch: ''ressorten''). Within the capital city of Paramaribo, a resort entails a neighbourhood; in other cases it is more akin to a municipality, consisting of a central place with a few settlements around it. The resorts in the Sipaliwini District are especially large, since the interior of Suriname is sparsely inhabited. The average resort is about and has almost 8,000 inhabitants. Kampong Baroe
Kampong Baroe ( Javanese: ꦏꦩ꧀ꦥꦸꦁꦧꦫꦸ; Standard Malay: ''Kampung Baru'') is a resort in Suriname, located in the Saramacca District. Its population at the 2012 census was 2,248, the majority being Javanese, and East Indian. The main agricultural crop is peanuts. Kampong Baroe also contains cattle, pig, and chicken farms. "Kampong Baroe" in Malay language literally means "New Village" (Kampong: Village and ''Baru/Baroe'': New). Kampong Baroe has a clinic, and a school. On 23 March 2020, construction of a multi functional centre started.
