Bosnian Austrians
Bosnian Austrians are citizens of Austria whose ancestry can be traced to Bosnia and Herzegovina. The vast majority of Bosnians emigrated to Austria during and after the Bosnian War of the 1990s, though a large number emigrated as early as the 19th century. Communities The largest Bosnian communities in Austria are found in Graz, Linz and Wels; followed by Salzburg, Villach, Klagenfurt and Vienna. A historic moment for the Bosnians of Austria took place on 29 June 2013 in the city of Wels. The Trg Bošnjaka (Platz der Bosniaken) was unveiled in front of the Bosnian Austrian Cultural Center as a token of appreciation and the good cooperation between Bosnian Austrians and the city administration. Bosnian War
The Bosnian War ( sh, Rat u Bosni i Hercegovini / Рат у Босни и Херцеговини) was an international armed conflict that took place in Bosnia and Herzegovina between 1992 and 1995. The war is commonly seen as having started on 6 April 1992, following a number of earlier violent incidents. The war ended on 14 December 1995 when the Dayton accords were signed. The main belligerents were the forces of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina and those of Herzeg-Bosnia and Republika Srpska, proto-states led and supplied by Croatia and Serbia, respectively. The war was part of the breakup of Yugoslavia. Following the Slovenian and Croatian secessions from the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1991, the multi-ethnic Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina – which was inhabited by mainly Muslim Bosniaks (44%), Orthodox Serbs (32.5%) and Catholic Croats (17%) – passed a referendum for independence on 29 February 1992. Azra Akšamija is a Bosnian-Austrian artist and architectural historian. Her work focuses on the role of cultural and religious identity in conflicts, especially in the recent history of the Bosnian War and its aftermath. Akšamija is currently a professor at the Art, Culture and Technology program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Artwork Wearable Mosques A series of Akšamija's projects translate the codes of religious architecture into clothing and contextualize them into a specific cultural setting. Anel Hadžić (; born 16 August 1989) is a Bosnian former professional footballer who played as a defensive midfielder. Hadžić started his professional career at Ried, before joining Sturm Graz in 2013. Three years later, he was transferred to Eskişehirspor. Later that year, he signed with Fehérvár. In 2021, Hadžić moved to Wacker Innsbruck. He switched to Wels later that year. Amer Hrustanović (born 11 June 1988) is an amateur Austrian Greco-Roman wrestler, who competes in the men's light heavyweight category. He holds both Austrian and Bosnian citizenship in order to compete internationally in wrestling, including the Olympic games. Hrustanovic is also a member of the wrestling team for AC Wals in Salzburg, and is coached and trained by Marco Haring Hannes.
