Bosniaks in Syria, also known as Bosnians in Syria, refers to citizens of Syria who are, or descend from, ethnic Bosniak people. They form one of the smaller ethnic minorities in the country. Much of the Bosniak community have become Arabized; for this reason, they are often counted as "Arab". Indeed, many Bosniaks who adhere to Islam do self-identify as Arabs, however, there are still some who have retained their national identity. The Bosniaks ( bs, Bošnjaci, Cyrillic: Бошњаци, ; , ) are a South Slavic ethnic group native to the Southeast European historical region of Bosnia, which is today part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, who share a common Bosnian ancestry, culture, history and language. Those sharing this surname are the descendants of Bosniaks apprehensive of living under Christian rule after the Austro-Hungarian occupation of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1878, who immigrated to Ottoman Syria. Ottoman Syria ( ar, سوريا العثمانية) refers to divisions of the Ottoman Empire within the region of Syria, usually defined as being east of the Mediterranean Sea, west of the Euphrates River, north of the Arabian Desert and south of the Taurus Mountains.
