Bornholms Kunstmuseum
The Bornholm Art Museum (''Bornholms Kunstmuseum'') is situated on the Danish island of Bornholm, above the Sanctuary Rocks (''Helligdomsklipperne'') about 6 kilometres north-west of Gudhjem, Denmark. History The museum's permanent collection consists principally of paintings by artists with connections to Bornholm from the early 19th century to the present day. Special attention is given to the Bornholm school of painters which emerged at the beginning of the last century when a number of modernists, attracted to picturesque Bornholm and the tiny island of Christiansø, painted landscapes and local nature. The permanent exhibition includes works by Edvard Weie, Karl Isakson, Olaf Rude, Kræsten Iversen, Niels Lergaard and Oluf Høst. Bornholm
Bornholm () is a Danish island in the Baltic Sea, to the east of the rest of Denmark, south of Sweden, northeast of Germany and north of Poland. Strategically located, Bornholm has been fought over for centuries. It has usually been ruled by Denmark, but also by Sweden and by Lübeck. The ruin of Hammershus, at the northwestern tip of the island, is the largest medieval fortress in northern Europe, testament to the importance of its location. Bornholm and Ertholmene comprise the last remaining Danish territory in Skåneland east of Øresund, having been surrendered to Sweden in 1658, but regained by Denmark in 1660 after a local revolt. Olaf Rude
Olaf Rude (26 April 1886 – 17 June 1957) was a Art of Denmark, Danish painter. He was a professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Art from 1953 to 1956. He is remembered in particular for his paintings of oak trees at Skejten on Lolland, two of which can be seen at Christiansborg. Biography He was born in an area then in the Russian Empire (now in Estonia). As a child, he moved with his family to Frejlev (Guldborgsund Municipality) on the island of Lolland. In 1905, he studied at the Copenhagen Technical School and later at the Kunstnernes Frie Studieskole where he was taught by Kristian Zahrtmann and Johan Rohde. In 1911, he travelled to Paris where he was inspired especially by Paul Cézanne. On returning to Denmark, he became one of the modernism, classic modernists who around the time of the First World War focused on formal representation concentrating on form, line and colour. Oluf Høst
Oluf Høst (18 March 1884 – 14 May 1966) was a Danish Expressionist painter, the only member of the Bornholm school who was a native Bornholmer. Although he studied in Copenhagen, he returned to the Danish island of Bornholm in 1929 where he remained with his family for the rest of his life. Bognemark, a little farmhouse near Gudhjem, was one of Høst's favourite motifs. From 1935 on, he painted the farm some 200 times under varying conditions at different times of the year, often reflecting his particular mood at the time. His home in Gudhjem, built from two fishermen's cottages with a rocky garden in the rear, is named "Norresân" after the nearby harbour, Nørresand Havn, where he painted many of his works. Niels Lergaard
Niels Lergaard (10 February 1893-25 July 1982) was a Danish painter. He was a member of the Bornholm school of painters. Biography Lergaard was born at Vorup in Randers, Denmark. He first trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. He subsequently taught at the Royal Academy (1917–20). He spent a few years in Norway, where he lived until 1928 and where he became interested in Norwegian landscape painting. In the late 1920s, he moved to the picturesque Danish island of Bornholm where he joined the art colony known at the Bornholm school of painters (''Bornholmerskolen''). His paintings displayed the careful construction that characterized his work, for example in his landscapes of Gudhjem. Kræsten Iversen
Kristen "Kræsten" Iversen (, 26 January 1886 - 9 August 1955) was a Danish artist who is remembered both for his paintings and his painted glass windows. He was a member of the Bornholm school of painters and a professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts . Biography Iversen was born in the parish of Holsted in Vejen Municipality, Denmark. He was the son of Niels Laurids Pedersen (1848–1902) and Grethe Hansen (1851–1910). Between 1904-1905, He trained at the Copenhagen Technical College. He exhibited several time during 1910-1918 at the Artists' Autumn Exhibition. In 1919, he exhibited four works at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition. Karl Isakson
Karl Oscar Isakson (16 January 1878, in Stockholm – 19 February 1922) was a Swedish painter who spent much of his professional life in Denmark where he is considered to be one of the fathers of Modernism. Edvard Weie
Viggo Thorvald Edvard Weie (18 November 1879 - 9 April 1943) was a Danish Modernist painter. He was a recipient of Eckersberg Medal in 1925. He died during 1943 in Frederiksberg. Biography Weie was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. His father went away when Edvard was still very young and left his family in poverty. To help out, he would deliver newspapers every morning before school and later worked as a house painter. Despite the hardship, he was able to take art lessons. When he came of age, he went to Copenhagen to apply for admission to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, but was not accepted.
