Bornholm County
Bornholms Amt () is a former county (Danish, '' amt'') on the island of Bornholm in easternmost Denmark. Short history The county was established in 1662, replacing the former Hammershus Len. It was the only county unchanged by the administrative reforms of 1793 and 1970 consequently occupying the same territory from 1662 until 2002. Before the reform in 1970 there were 21 municipalities on the island, of which 6 market city municipalities (Danish: ''købstadskommuner'') and 15 parish municipalities (''sognekommuner''). The 6 market city municipalities were supervised by the county, differing from the situation in the rest of Denmark where the market city municipalities were supervised by the Interior ministry. This distinction ended in 1970, and since then only the term ''kommune'' (municipality) is used. Hasle, Bornholm
Hasle is a town and a former municipality on the west coast of the Baltic island of Bornholm, Denmark. Its population is 1,634 () The former municipality covered an area of , and had a total population of 6,382. It is now included in the municipality of Bornholm. With its pleasant setting, smokehouses, galleries and harbour, the town attracts many tourists. History The name "Hasle" appears to have originated from Old Danish "''hasli''", meaning "hazel", and was used in 1335 as the name of the northernmost of Bornholm's four counties (''herreder'') before being applied to the town in 1546. In the middle of the 16th century, Hasle was granted rights as a market town (which it maintains today as Bornholm's second smallest market town) authorizing it to have a local administration headed by a mayor and to practice manufacturing and trading. Aakirkeby
Aakirkeby or Åkirkeby is a town in Denmark with a population of 2,119 (1 January 2022). It is the third largest town on the island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea. It was the main town of the now abolished Aakirkeby Municipality. The town is situated in the middle of the southern half of Bornholm, between Rønne and Nexø. The Danish TV-station TV2 has a local office (TV2/Bornholm) in Aakirkeby. Aakirkeby could be translated to "Stream Church town", as Å or Aa is a stream. Hammershus Len
Hammershus is a Middle ages, medieval era fortification at Hammeren on the northern tip of the Denmark, Danish island of Bornholm. The fortress was partially demolished around 1750 and is now a ruin. It was partially restored around 1900. History Hammershus was Scandinavia's largest Middle ages, medieval fortification and is one of the largest medieval fortifications in Northern Europe. It is situated in the Baltic Sea above sea level. The fortification was erected in the 13th century and consists of the base castle residence and features a grand tower called the "mantel" tower. Hammershus Fortress features a perimeter wall around the castle grounds. During a number of successive struggles between the list of Danish monarchs, kings of Denmark versus the Archbishopric, the fortress served as a refuge for the Archbishops including Bishop Jens Grand. Rønne
Rønne ( sv, Rönne) is the largest town on the Danish island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea. It has a population of 13,807 (1 January 2022). It was a municipality in its own right from 1970 until 2002, when Bornholm was a county (Danish: ''Bornholms Amt''). It has an area of 29.11 square kilometres (11.24 square miles), and is the administrative centre of the Bornholm municipality. 11,539 inhabitants live in Rønne Parish (number 16 on the map of parishes; click on maps to enlarge for better view), which is a narrow piece of land on the westernmost of the island and stretching north and southward comprising around a third of the area of the former municipality. Bornholm
Bornholm () is a Danish island in the Baltic Sea, to the east of the rest of Denmark, south of Sweden, northeast of Germany and north of Poland. Strategically located, Bornholm has been fought over for centuries. It has usually been ruled by Denmark, but also by Sweden and by Lübeck. The ruin of Hammershus, at the northwestern tip of the island, is the largest medieval fortress in northern Europe, testament to the importance of its location.
