Boris Gorban
Boris Aleksandrovich Gorban (russian: Борис Александрович Горбань; born 26 September 1978) is a Russian athlete who ran in the 400 metres hurdles. Gorban won the silver medal in 4 x 400 metres relay at the 2001 World Indoor Championships, establishing a national record of 3:04.82 minutes together with teammates Aleksandr Ladeyshchikov, Ruslan Mashchenko and Andrey Semyonov. Gorban won another silver medal in relay at the 2004 World Indoor Championships, together with Dmitriy Forshev, Andrey Rudnitskiy and Aleksandr Usov. He participated at the 2000 and 2004 Summer Olympics without reaching the final. 400 Metres Hurdles
The 400 metres hurdles is a track and field hurdling event. The event has been on the Olympic athletics programme since 1900 for men and since 1984 for women. On a standard outdoor track, 400 metres is the length of the inside lane, once around the stadium. Runners stay in their lanes the entire way after starting out of the blocks and must clear ten hurdles that are evenly spaced around the track. The hurdles are positioned and weighted so that they fall forward if bumped into with sufficient force, to prevent injury to the runners. Although there is no longer any penalty for knocking hurdles over, runners prefer to clear them cleanly, as touching them during the race slows runners down. The best male athletes can run the 400 m hurdles in a time of around 46 seconds, while the very best female athletes achieve a time of around 51 seconds. 2001 World Championships In Athletics
The 8th World Championships in Athletics, under the auspices of the International Association of Athletics Federations, were held at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada between 3 August and 12 August and was the first time the event had visited North America. The music for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies was composed by Canadian composers Jan Randall and Cassius Khan. The ceremonies also featured a 1000 voice choir, and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. Edmonton defeated bids from Paris, France (which hosted the next edition) and the San Francisco Bay Area in the United States to host the event.
