Border League
The Border League, is the oldest established rugby union league in the World, having been formed in 1901. Currently known as the Booker Border League, after its sponsors, teams from all over the Scottish Borders as well as Berwick RFC from Northumberland compete every year from the competition. The Borders has always been a stronghold of rugby union, coupled with the competitive rivalry that exists between the local Border towns, derbies are something to behold, with the teams fighting for pride as well as league points. Although originally the premier tournament for its clubs, the formation of a league system in the 1970s means that Border clubs now play in the Scottish League Championship and the Scottish Cup and, although still prestigious, the Border League is now regarded by many of its members as more of a supplementary competition. Rugby Union
Rugby union, commonly known simply as rugby, is a close-contact team sport that originated at Rugby School in the first half of the 19th century. One of the two codes of rugby football, it is based on running with the ball in hand. In its most common form, a game is played between two teams of 15 players each, using an oval-shaped ball on a rectangular field called a pitch. The field has H-shaped goalposts at both ends. History Of Rugby Union In Scotland
Rugby union in Scotland in its modern form has existed since the mid-19th century. As with the history of rugby union itself however, it emerged from older traditional forms of football which preceded the codification of the sport. In the same manner as rugby union in England, rugby union in Scotland would grow at a significant rate to the point where Scotland played England in the first ever rugby union international in 1871, a match which was won by the Scottish team. In 1883, Scotland would become a founding member of the annual Home Nations Championship with England, Wales and Ireland, (now the Six Nations Championship with the inclusion of France and Italy), and since its creation in 1987 have competed in every Rugby World Cup. East Lothian
East Lothian (; sco, East Lowden; gd, Lodainn an Ear) is one of the 32 council areas of Scotland, as well as a historic county, registration county and lieutenancy area. The county was called Haddingtonshire until 1921. In 1975, the historic county was incorporated for local government purposes into Lothian Region as East Lothian District, with some slight alterations of its boundaries. Haddington RFC
Haddington Rugby Football Club is a rugby union team based in Haddington, East Lothian. History Founded in 1911, the team plays its home games at Neilson Park. Haddington player Jock Wemyss founded the Co-optimists; following a Barbarians inspired match in Haddington in 1924. They compete in BT National League Division 3, the 3rd tier of Scottish club rugby. Player development The minis section was set up almost 50 years ago by Bill Hamilton. The minis and the School of Rugby with Knox Academy are key to the ongoing success serving as nursery for players. Haddington currently have over 100 kids in each; and the club are delighted that they recently managed to play a couple of girls matches as they seek to develop a woman's team. Biggar RFC
Biggar RFC is a rugby union club based in Biggar, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. Founded in 1975, the team plays its home games at Hartree Mill. The men's side currently competes in , the women's side currently compete in . History The club was formed in 1975 by five men who had been heavily involved in rugby clubs in their younger days and thought that the area might sustain a new social rugby club. These were Dr. Mike Bewsher ( Melrose), Richard Carr ( Harlequins), Les Clerihew ( Stewarts College), Archie Stott (Hawick Trades) and Tom Wight ( Melrose). St. Boswells Rugby Football Club are a rugby union side in the small village of St Boswells in the Borders, Scotland. History Founded in 1926; it closed in 1932–33; the club went into liquidation at the start of World War 2; and was revived after the War in 1946. Eyemouth RFC
Eyemouth ( sco, Heymooth) is a small town and civil parish in Berwickshire, in the Scottish Borders area of Scotland. It is east of the main north–south A1 road and north of Berwick-upon-Tweed. The town's name comes from its location at the mouth of the Eye Water river. The Berwickshire coastline consists of high cliffs over deep clear water with sandy coves and picturesque harbours. A fishing port, Eyemouth holds a yearly Herring Queen Festival. Notable buildings in the town include Gunsgreen House and a cemetery watch-house built to stand guard against the Resurrectionists (body snatchers). Earlston RFC
Earlston RFC is a rugby union club, based at Earlston in the Scottish Borders (formerly Berwickshire). Earlston is in the of the East Regional League. It is the largest Scottish Borders club not to participate in the Border League. It takes part in the Borders Sevens Circuit each May, which is the oldest tournament of its kind in the world. Duns RFC
Duns Rugby Football Club is a rugby union side based in Duns in Borders, Scotland. They are known as 'The Dingers' from the town motto, "Duns Dings A" (Duns Beats All). For the 2015–16 season they will play in East Regional League Division One. It is unclear if they will return to the Border League(the oldest established rugby union league in the world), having lost their place in 2007–08. They will also enter the BT Border Shield and its various offshoots, along with various local Rugby Sevens tournaments. Duns is the only Border League side not to have their own Sevens tournament. Kelso RFC
Kelso Rugby Football Club are a Scottish rugby union team founded in 1876. They play their home games at Poynder Park, Kelso in the Scottish Borders. The men's team currently play in and the Border League (the oldest established rugby union league in the world); the women's team play in . History Kelso RFC won the prestigious Melrose Sevens tournament seven times in the space of 12 years from 1978 to 1989. Kelso were also winners of the Scottish Premiership in 1988 and 1989. The most recent successes for the club in the 15-a-side game were consecutive Premier League championships in the 1987–88 and 1988–89 seasons.
