Biggar RFC
Biggar RFC is a rugby union club based in Biggar, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. Founded in 1975, the team plays its home games at Hartree Mill. The men's side currently competes in , the women's side currently compete in . History The club was formed in 1975 by five men who had been heavily involved in rugby clubs in their younger days and thought that the area might sustain a new social rugby club. These were Dr. Mike Bewsher ( Melrose), Richard Carr ( Harlequins), Les Clerihew ( Stewarts College), Archie Stott (Hawick Trades) and Tom Wight ( Melrose). Twenty-eight years later, at the end of season 2003–04, the club found itself promoted to the top division in Scotland for season 2004–05. In the 2005–06 season, the club finished 5th in the Scottish Premiership. In their second season, they slipped to relegation. The Scottish Rugby Union (SRU; gd, Aonadh Rugbaidh na h-Alba) is the governing body of rugby union in Scotland. Biggar, South Lanarkshire
Biggar ( gd, Bigear ) is a town and former burgh in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, in the Southern Uplands near the River Clyde on the A702. The closest towns are Lanark and Peebles. Details The town was once served by the Symington, Biggar and Broughton Railway, which ran from the Caledonian Railway (now the West Coast Main Line) at Symington to join the Peebles Railway at Peebles. The station and signal box are still standing but housing has been built on the line running west from the station and the railway running east from the station is a public footpath to Broughton, part of the Biggar Country Path network. The new Biggar & Upper Clydesdale Museum run by the Biggar Museum Trust opened in 2015 and the Biggar Gasworks Museum is the only preserved gas works in Scotland. Harlequin (; it, Arlecchino ; lmo, Arlechin, Bergamasque pronunciation ) is the best-known of the ''zanni'' or comic servant characters from the Italian ''commedia dell'arte'', associated with the city of Bergamo. Stewart's Melville RFC is a rugby union club based in Edinburgh, Scotland. They team competes in Scottish National League Division One, the second tier of Scottish club rugby. Home matches are played at Inverleith; this was the venue for Scotland's home games between 1899 and 1925, during which time the first matches against France and New Zealand were played. History The club took on its present form following the merger of Stewart's College FP and Melville College FP in 1973 when the club became known as Stewart's Melville FP RFC. As the name suggests, many of the players in the club's history were former pupils of the Stewart's Melville College (formed in a merger of Daniel Stewart's College and Melville College) in Edinburgh. Hawick Trades is a former rugby union club based in Hawick, in the Scottish Borders. They played in the Border League until 2004. History The club began in 1946. It was founded after the Second War by Hawick apprentices; based on a Combined Trades team that came together during the Second World War. Association with Glynneath From 1956, Hawick Trades have had a close association with the Welsh club Glynneath RFC. Since that date the clubs have played each other, one year at home; the next away. Disbanding of the club At the start of the 2004–05 season the Border League announced that Hawick Trades would be withdrawn from the league as their lack of players meant that their fixtures would be unfulfilled. The Scottish Premiership (referred to as the Tennents Premiership for sponsorship reasons) is an amateur league competition for Scottish rugby union clubs. First held in 1973, it is the top division of the Scottish League Championship. The most recent (2019) champions are Ayr, while the most successful club is Hawick, who have won the competition twelve times. Ten clubs contest the league, with the bottom club relegated to the Scottish National League Division One and second-bottom club involved in a play-off. The top level of club rugby in Scotland are the two professional teams – Glasgow Warriors and Edinburgh Rugby – that play in the United Rugby Championship. They assign their players to the clubs below in a Pro-Draft; so that they can still play when not used by the professional sides. The Scottish National League (currently named Tennents National League One for sponsorship reasons) is an amateur league competition for rugby union clubs in Scotland. It forms the 2nd tier of the Scottish League Championship. The league winner is automatically promoted to the top tier of Scottish league rugby (The Tennents Premiership). The bottom two clubs are relegated into National League Two, replaced by the top two teams in that league. Scott Lawson
Scott Lawson (born 28 September 1981 in Lanark) is a Scottish rugby union player who plays club rugby for Newcastle Falcons. Lawson started playing rugby with Biggar RFC he went through the youth system and all the way to the first XV. He then moved to sign and play for the Glasgow Pro' team. He played for Gloucester Rugby after moving from Sale Sharks in September 2008. After four years, Lawson left Gloucester in 2012 and joined London Irish on a two-year contract. But on 22 April 2013 it was announced Lawson would join newly promoted Newcastle Falcons in the Aviva Premiership for the 2013–14 season. He plays internationally for Scotland. He plays as a hooker. Peebles Sevens
Peebles Sevens is an annual rugby sevens event held by Peebles RFC, in Peebles, Scotland. This was one of a group of Sevens tournaments instated after the First World War extending the original Borders Spring Circuit. The Peebles Sevens began in 1923. Due to a calendar change in 2016; the tournament was moved from end-of-season to start-of-season. Hence 2016 shows two winners:- one for 2015–16 season and one for 2016–17 season. Subsequent tournaments were held as start of season Sevens. The 2018 winner (for season 2018–19) is Melrose. The Peebles Sevens is part of the Kings of the Sevens championship run by the Border League. This event was one of the first Sevens tournaments in the Borders to run with a 12-person squad in 2018–19 season, as opposed to a 10-person squad. It also featured rolling substitutions.
