Boonton Historical Society And Museum
The Boonton Historical Society and Museum, is located at 210 Main Street in Boonton, New Jersey. The building was constructed in 1898 as a private residence for Dr. John Taylor and his wife Adelaide Kanouse. Since 1959, the building has served as local history museum beneath the auspices of the Boonton Historical Society. History In 1897, John L. Kanouse gave the lot on which the house now stands as a Christmas gift to his daughter Adelaide T. Kanouse and her husband, Dr. John Taylor. Some believe this gift may have been intended to encourage the couple to depart their residence of 15 years in Succasunna and Mount Arlington, to move closer, which they subsequently did in 1898 with Dr. Taylor continuing his medical practice at the location. Boonton is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2020 United States census, the town's population was 8,815, an increase of 468 (+5.6%) from the 2010 census count of 8,347, which in turn reflected a decline of 149 (−1.8%) from the 8,496 counted in the 2000 census. The settlement was originally called "Boone-Towne" in 1761 in honor of the Colonial Governor Thomas Boone. Boonton was originally formed on March 16, 1866, within portions of Hanover Township and Pequannock Township. The Boonton Historic District is a historic district (United States), historic district along Main, Church, Birch, Cornelia, and Cedar Streets in the town of Boonton, New Jersey, Boonton in Morris County, New Jersey. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 29, 1980, for its significance in architecture. The district has 22 contributing buildings, including the Boonton Public Library, which was previously listed individually on the NRHP. With History and description The development of Boonton began with the construction of the Morris Canal along the Rockaway River from 1829 to 1830. The New Jersey Iron Company was organized and bought of land here to construct an ironworks and company town. The Historical Marker Database (HMdb.org) is an online database that documents locations of numerous historical markers in the United States as well as other countries. The database was launched in 2006 by computer programmer J. J. Prats. The HMdb served as the basis for the database for the online augmented reality game Ingress, which was then later repurposed for Pokémon Go. The HMdb was launched in 2006 with 179 markers that Prats had personally documented. By 2015 the site listed more than 74,000 markers.
