Bonymaen (electoral Ward)
Bon-y-maen (until 2022 Bonymaen) is the name of an electoral ward in the City and County of Swansea, Wales, UK. The ward is bounded by Neath Port Talbot county borough to the east and the Swansea wards of Llansamlet and Morriston to the north; St. Thomas to the south; and Landore to the west. For the purposes of elections Bon-y-maen is divided into several polling districts: Winch Wen, Pentre Dwr, Hanover Square and Pentrechwyth. Bon-y-maen returns 2 councillors to the local council. The current councillors are Mandy Evans and Paul Lloyd (both Labour Party). The electoral ward consists of some or all of the following areas: Bon-y-maen, Cefn Hengoed, Copper Quarter, Crymlyn Bog, Morfa, Pentrechwyth, Pentre Dwr, Winch Wen, in the parliamentary constituency of Swansea East. Swansea
Swansea (; cy, Abertawe ) is a coastal city and the second-largest city of Wales. It forms a principal area, officially known as the City and County of Swansea ( cy, links=no, Dinas a Sir Abertawe). 1999 City And County Of Swansea Council Election
The second elections to the City and County of Swansea Council were held in May 1999. It was preceded by the 1995 election and followed by the 2004 election. Overview All council seats were up for election. These were the second elections held following local government reorganisation and the abolition of West Glamorgan County Council. Boundaries There were some changes in ward boundaries for this election. The numbers of councillors changed in some wards, resulting in an overall increase in councillors to 72, as a result of ''The City and County of Swansea (Electoral Arrangements) Order 1998''. A winch is a mechanical device that is used to pull in (wind up) or let out (wind out) or otherwise adjust the tension of a rope or wire rope (also called "cable" or "wire cable"). Morfa is a district of Swansea, Wales. It straddles the Bon-y-maen and Landore wards and generally covers the eastern part of the district of Landore. Morfa is originally an old Welsh word for "marsh", not so much used in current parlance but found in Welsh placenames. The area is named after the Morfa copperworks which once existed in the area. History The Morfa Copperworks was started in 1835 and operated until the site closed in 1980. Several of the copperworks buildings still remain on the site. Morfa was mainly an area of light industry in the late 20th century. Until the development of the Morfa retail park and the Swansea.com Stadium in the new millennium, the area was a post industrial brownfield site with a local sports and leisure complex. Crymlyn Bog
Crymlyn Bog ( cy, Cors Crymlyn) is a nature reserve and a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest of international significance, near Swansea, south Wales. It is the largest area of lowland fen in Wales and lies immediately to the eastern side of Kilvey Hill just north of the industrial area of Crymlyn Burrows. Plantlife found in the bog is more typical of that found in East Anglia. Habitats range from swamps, carr (fen), water meadows and tall reed beds to waterlogged scrub consisting mainly of willow, where wetter areas merge with woodland. There are a number of plants found in the wetland that are rare in Great Britain. Examples of these include the slender cotton grass and lesser water plantain. In 2003, surveys of Crymlyn Bog, Pant-y-Sais Fen and the inter-connecting wetlands identified the area as one of only three locations in the UK at which the fen raft spider is found. Bon-y-maen, sometimes spelt ''Bonymaen'', ( cy, Bôn-y-maen) is a community in Swansea, Wales located about north east of Swansea city centre. It falls within the coterminous Bonymaen ward for elections to Swansea Council. Bôn-y-maen is Welsh for 'Base of the stone' and there are legends that the same stone ends in Penmaen ( en, Stone End) on the Gower Peninsula.
