Bonnie Bryant (golfer)
Bonnie Bryant (born October 5, 1943) is an American professional golfer who played on the LPGA Tour. She is the only player in LPGA Tour history to win a tournament left-handed. Bryant was born in Tulare, California. She did not take up golf until age 20, learning from Vic Lombardi, a National League pitcher for Brooklyn and Pittsburgh. Prior to taking up golf, she played five years of AAA- fast pitch softball. Bryant joined the LPGA Tour in 1971. She won once on the LPGA Tour. Her win came at the 1974 Bill Branch LPGA Classic in Fort Myers, Florida. She shot a 7-under- par, 209 to claim the $5,700 first prize. Tulare, California
Tulare ( ) is a city in Tulare County, California. The population was 68,875 at the 2020 census. It is located in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley, eight miles south of Visalia and sixty miles north of Bakersfield. The city is named for the Tulare Lake, once the largest freshwater lake west of the Great Lakes. Etymology The English name ''Tulare'' derives ultimately from Classical Nahuatl tōllin, "sedge" or "reeds", by way of Spanish ''tule'', which also exists in English as a loanword. The name is cognate with Tula, Tultepec, and Tultitlán de Mariano Escobedo. History The Yokuts people built reed boats and fished in what was later to be called Tulare Lake in their homeland for centuries, until the invasion and settlement by the Spanish and American pioneers. 1974 LPGA Tour
The 1974 LPGA Tour was the 25th season since the LPGA Tour officially began in 1950. The season ran from February 1 to November 24. The season consisted of 32 official money events. JoAnne Carner and Sandra Haynie won the most tournaments, six each. Carner led the money list with earnings of $87,094. The season saw the first tournament in Mexico, the Bing Crosby International Classic. There were three first-time winners in 1974: Bonnie Bryant, Gail Denenberg, and Sue Roberts. Bryant was the first, and through 2016 only, left-handed golfer to win on the LPGA Tour. Kathy Whitworth won the LPGA's annual tour stop in St. Petersburg for a fifth time. In human biology, handedness is an individual's preferential use of one hand, known as the dominant hand, due to it being stronger, faster or more dextrous. Mary Kathryn "Mickey" Wright (February 14, 1935 – February 17, 2020) was an American professional golfer who played on the LPGA Tour. She became a member of the tour in 1955 and won 82 LPGA Tour career events including 13 major championships. She is a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame. Jo Ann Washam
Jo Ann Washam (May 24, 1950 – December 6, 2019) was an American professional golfer who played on the LPGA Tour. Washam was born in Auburn, Washington. She played college golf and basketball at Washington State University, where she also joined the women's fraternity Alpha Gamma Delta. She was elected to the Washington State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1982. Washam won three times on the LPGA Tour between 1975 and 1979. Washam died on December 6, 2019. Hollis Stacy
Hollis Stacy (born March 16, 1954) is an American professional golfer. She became a member of the LPGA Tour in 1974, winning four major championships and 18 LPGA Tour events. She was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in the veterans category in 2012. Shelley Lee Hamlin (May 28, 1949 – October 15, 2018) was an American professional golfer who played on the LPGA Tour. Career Hamlin was born in San Mateo, California. As an amateur golfer, she won the California Women's Amateur four times. She played at Stanford University and won the 1971 national individual intercollegiate golf championship. She played on the 1968 and 1970 Curtis Cup teams and the 1966 and 1968 Espirito Santo Trophy teams. In 1969, she lost in the finals of the U.S. Women's Amateur to Catherine Lacoste. Barbara Jane Blalock (born September 19, 1945) is an American business executive and retired professional golfer. After winning several New England golf tournaments in her youth, Blalock joined the LPGA Tour as a professional in 1969, being named LPGA Tour Rookie of the Year in 1969 and Most Improved Golfer in 1970 and 1971.
