Bon Aire
Bon Aire is a historic home located near Shipman, Nelson County, Virginia. It is a Federal-style brick dwelling dramatically sited on a hill overlooking the James River. It was built about 1812 in a three-part scheme; with a two-story center section flanked by -story, two-bay wings. Nelson County is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia, in the United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 14,775. Its county seat is Lovingston. Nelson County is part of the Charlottesville, VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. History At the time the English began settling Virginia in the 1600s, the inhabitants of what is now Nelson County were a Siouan-speaking tribe called the Nahyssan. They were probably connected to the Manahoac. Nelson County was created in 1807 from Amherst County. The government was formed the following year. Federal Architecture
Federal-style architecture is the name for the classicizing architecture built in the newly founded United States between 1780 and 1830, and particularly from 1785 to 1815, which was heavily based on the works of Andrea Palladio with several innovations on Palladian architecture by Thomas Jefferson and his contemporaries first for Jefferson's Monticello estate and followed by many examples in government building throughout the United States. Point of Honor is an historic home, now a city museum, located in Lynchburg, Virginia. The property has commanding views of the city and the James River. Its name originated due to the land on which it is built being used as a clandestine dueling ground. George Cabell (physician)
Dr. George Cabell Sr. (November 1, 1766 – December 27, 1823) was a surgeon and builder of Point of Honor, a mansion in the city of Lynchburg, Virginia. Cabell was born in Buckingham County, Virginia and attended Hampden-Sydney Academy. He became the first to earn an official medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1790. Dr. Cabell was a friend and personal physician to the patriot Patrick Henry and a frequent correspondent with his neighbor, Thomas Jefferson. By 1798 Dr. George Cabell was practicing in Lynchburg, and that year married Sarah Winston (1770–1826), the eldest daughter of Judge Edmund Winston and Alice Taylor Winston. She was a lady of "great elegance, beauty and refinement". The Winston family was well-connected in their own right, and the marriage created a very powerful union.
