Bologna San Vitale ( it, Stazione di Bologna San Vitale) is a railway station in Bologna, Italy. The station opened in 2013 and is located on the Bologna–Ancona and Bologna–Florence lines. The train services are operated by Trenitalia Tper. The station is managed by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), a subsidiary of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FSI), Italy's state-owned rail company. Location Bologna San Vitale railway station is situated east of the city centre, in the San Donato-San Vitale borough. History The station was formally opened on 15 December 2013. Commercial service on the Bologna-Ancona line started on 14 September 2014, while services on the Bologna–Florence line began on 13 December 2015. Features The station does not feature any building. Bologna–Florence Railway
The Bologna–Florence railway is one of the major links in the Italian rail network, connecting the railways of the Po Valley with the railways of Tuscany and central Italy under the Apennines. It is also known as the Bologna–Florence direttissima—"direttissima" is Italian for "most direct". It was Italy's greatest engineering achievement in the first half of the twentieth century. When it opened in 1934 it significantly shortened the old winding Porrettana line over the Apennines via Pistoia, and was made possible by the 18.507 km-long Apennine Base Tunnel. Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) is the Italian railway infrastructure manager, subsidiary of Ferrovie dello Stato (FS), a state-owned holding company. RFI is the owner of Italy's railway network, it provides signalling, maintenance and other services for the railway network. It also operates train ferries between the Italian Peninsula and Sicily.
