Monroe County is a county on the northeast border of the U.S. state of Mississippi next to Alabama. As of the 2010 census, the population was 36,989. Its county seat is Aberdeen. History The county is named in honor of James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States. Part of the county east of the Tombigbee River originally made-up part of the Alabama Territory, belonging to Marion County, until new lines of demarcation put it in the State of Mississippi in 1821. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of , of which is land and (0.9%) is water. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau. Hamilton is a census-designated place and unincorporated community in Monroe County, Mississippi. Hamilton is located on U.S. Route 45, east of the Tennessee–Tombigbee Waterway, north of Columbus Air Force Base. The third largest titanium dioxide manufacturing operation in the world is located in Hamilton. Demographics History Hamilton was the first county seat of Monroe County. In 1830, Monroe County was split to form Lowndes County to the south, and the county seat of Monroe County was moved north to Aberdeen. Cotton Gin Port is a ghost town in Monroe County, Mississippi, United States. Geography Cotton Gin Port was located at on the east bank of the Tombigbee river. History Cotton Gin Port was the first town settled by Europeans in what became north Mississippi. It was developed on the east bank of the Tombigbee River, at a crossing of vital Indian trails. This had been a base of expeditions of French explorers Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville in 1736 and Vaudreuil in 1752. After the United States acquired the territory, it was first considered part of Marion County in the Alabama Territory. The new demarcation lines of 1820-21 established a state boundary that allocated the town and related area to Mississippi.
