Bogra-1 is a constituency represented in the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) of Bangladesh since 2008 by Abdul Mannan of the Awami League. Boundaries The constituency encompasses Sariakandi and Sonatola upazilas. History The constituency was created for the first general elections in newly independent Bangladesh, held in 1973. Ahead of the 2008 general election, the Election Commission redrew constituency boundaries to reflect population changes revealed by the 2001 Bangladesh census. The 2008 redistricting altered the boundaries of the constituency. Ahead of the 2014 general election, the Election Commission reduced the boundaries of the constituency. Mafiz Ali Chowdhury (1919–1994) was a Bangladeshi politician who was part of the Bangladesh Awami League and a former Minister and Member of Parliament. Early life Chowdhury was born in 1919 in Mongalbari, Joypurhat District, East Bengal, British Raj. He graduated from Kolkata Presidency College with a Bachelor of Science and completed his Master of Science in 1937 from the University of Dhaka. In 1949, he completed his Doctor of Philosophy from an American university. He was a member of the London-based Royal Society of Chemistry. Career Chowdhury became involved with politics while still a student, joining the All India Muslim Chhatra Samity (All India Muslim Student Association). Sariakandi Upazila ( bn, সারিয়াকান্দি উপজেলা) is an upazila of Bogra District in the Division of Rajshahi, Bangladesh. Sariakandi Thana was established in 1886 and was converted into an upazila in 1983. It is named after its administrative center, the town of Sariakandi. Geography Sariakandi Upazila has a total area of . About three-fifths is land and two-fifths is water, chiefly the Jamuna River, which flows south through the upazila. Abdul Alim was a Bangladesh Nationalist Party politician and the former member of parliament for Joypurhat-1 and Minister. He was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment. Early life Alim was born 1 November 1930 in Joypurhat District, East Bengal, British India. His father, Abdul Wahed Sarkar was the owner of Islamia Rice in Hoogly Pandua. His family used to live in Thaipara, Pandua, Hooghly District but moved to Joypurhat District soon after the partition of India in 1950. 1986 Bangladeshi General Election
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 7 May 1986. A total of 1,527 candidates contested the election. The result was a victory for the Jatiya Party, which won 153 of the 300 seats. Voter turnout was 61.1%. Bangladesh Nationalist Party, the winner of the previous elections, boycotted the election. British observers including a journalist termed the elections a "tragedy for democracy" and a "cynically frustrated exercise". Background In 1982 a coup d'état led by Army Chief Hussain Muhammad Ershad overthrew democratically elected President Abdus Sattar, suspended the Constitution and imposed martial law. The Jatiya Sangsad ( bn, জাতীয় সংসদ, lit=National Parliament, translit=Jatiyô Sôngsôd), often referred to simply as the ''Sangsad'' or JS and also known as the House of the Nation, is the supreme legislative body of Bangladesh. The current parliament of Bangladesh contains 350 seats, including 50 seats reserved exclusively for women. Elected occupants are called Member of Parliament, or MP.
