Bob Nettle
Robert Dale Nettle (January 19, 1924 – October 3, 2019) was an American politician who served as a member of the Ohio General Assembly. He was also a member of the Barberton City Council for a number of years. Originally elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in 1976, Nettle went on to serve five terms in the lower chamber. In 1986, following the death of Senator Marcus Roberto, Nettle was chosen by Senate Democrats for an appointment to his seat. He went on to win election to the remaining two years of Roberto's term in 1986. He won election to a full term in 1988. By 1990, Nettle was serving as minority whip. However, after his reelection in 1992, he became assistant minority whip. In 1995, midway through his third term in the Senate, Nettle announced he would retire. He resigned on March 31, 1995, citing health concerns. Ultimately, after much debate, he was replaced by Leigh Herington. Marcus Roberto
Marcus Aurelius Roberto (November 26, 1930 – February 24, 1986), a Democrat, was a member of the Ohio General Assembly. Roberto initially won a seat in the Ohio House of Representatives in 1970, replacing Anice Johnson, and won reelection in 1972 and 1974. However, Roberto sought to move up to the Ohio Senate in 1976. Challenging David W. Johnson, Roberto won, and took his seat in the Senate in 1977. He was reelected in 1980. Leigh Herington
Leigh E. Herington is an Ohio Democratic politician and a former member of the Ohio Senate. Herington was a long-serving local attorney and Chairman of the Portage County Democratic Party when appointed to replace Senator Bob Nettle in 1995, who had resigned. Up for election in 1996, Herington easily defended his seat in the primary battle against Barbara Sykes, and went on to win the general election. Easily winning reelection in 2000, Senate colleagues soon after voted to make Herington minority leader, the highest post in the caucus. Kenneth Cox
Kenneth R. Cox (born October 8, 1928) is an Ohio Democratic Party (United States), Democratic politician and a former member of the Ohio General Assembly. Life Born in Ohio in 1928, Cox attended the University of Akron. He was serving as mayor of Barberton, Ohio, when he opted to run for an open seat in the Ohio House of Representatives in 1972. He ended up being reelected in 1974. In 1976, Senator David Headley (politician), David Headley announced his retirement, and Cox won election to his Ohio Senate seat. In 1982, Cox considered a run for Ohio Treasurer, and eventually entered the race. However, he lost the primary nomination. Barberton is a city in Summit County, Ohio, United States. The population was 26,550 at the 2010 census. Lying directly southwest of Akron, it is a suburb of the Akron metropolitan area. History Barberton was founded in 1891 by industrialist O.C. Barber, who planned the town according to his vision of industry, progress and community. In 1894 he moved the manufacturing operations of the Diamond Match Company, which he formed from a merger of 11 companies, from Akron to Barberton. He soon was producing 250 million matches a day. Norton, Ohio
Norton is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 12,085 at the 2010 census and 11,996 at the 2019 estimate. All but a small portion of the city is in Summit County and is part of the Akron metropolitan area; a part extends into Wayne County and the Wooster Micropolitan Statistical Area. History In 1818, Norton Township was organized. It was originally a part of Wolf Creek Township which consisted of present-day Norton, Copley, Wadsworth, Sharon, Guilford, and Montville townships. Norton Township was surveyed by Joseph Darrow and plotted into lots half a mile square. Norton was known as Town 1, Range 12 of the Western Reserve. The Ohio House of Representatives is the lower house of the Ohio General Assembly, the state legislature of the U.S. state of Ohio; the other house of the bicameral legislature being the Ohio Senate. The House of Representatives first met in Chillicothe on March 3, 1803, under the later superseded state constitution of that year. In 1816, the capital was moved to Columbus, where it is located today. George Voinovich
George Victor Voinovich (July 15, 1936June 12, 2016) was an American politician who served as a United States senator from Ohio from 1999 to 2011, the 65th governor of Ohio from 1991 to 1998 and the 54th mayor of Cleveland from 1980 to 1989, the last Republican to serve in that office. Voinovich spent more than 46 years in public service—first as assistant attorney general of Ohio in 1963 and finally as the senior U.S. senator representing Ohio.
