Bob Maskell
Robert Maskell (May 27, 1940 – April 14, 2021) was a teacher and provincial level politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 2001 until 2004. Early life Maskell earned a Bachelor of Education degree at the University of Alberta. He became a teacher and then a principal at Jasper Place Composite High School and moved on to become the principal at the prestigious Victoria School of Performing and Visual Arts. Political career Maskell was elected to the Alberta Legislature in the 2001 Alberta general election. He defeated incumbent Liberal MLA Karen Leibovici to pick up Edmonton-Meadowlark for the Progressive Conservatives. He ran for a second term in office in the 2004 Alberta general election but was defeated by less than a couple hundred votes by Maurice Tougas a candidate for the Liberals. 2001 Alberta General Election
The 2001 Alberta general election was held on March 12, 2001 to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. The incumbent Alberta Progressive Conservative Party, led by Ralph Klein, won a strong majority for its tenth consecutive term in government. In addition to increasing its share of the popular vote to almost 62%, the PC Party won a majority of seats in Edmonton for the first time since 1982. In the process, they reduced the opposition to only nine MLAs in total. It was the Tories' biggest majority since the height of the Peter Lougheed era. Raj Sherman
Rajnish K. "Raj" Sherman (born 1965) is a Canadian politician from Alberta and former Liberal Member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta for Edmonton-Meadowlark; which he formerly represented as a Progressive Conservative. Sherman was elected leader of the Liberal Party on September 10, 2011, and led the party through the 2012 provincial election. He announced his immediate resignation on January 26, 2015, and that he will not be running for a third term as MLA in the next provincial election. Early life Sherman was born in 1965 in India but grew up in Squamish, British Columbia after moving there in 1975. As a youngster, he delivered newspapers for ''The Vancouver Sun'' and ''The Province''. The third of four sons, Sherman moved to Canada from India at a young age. 2012 Alberta General Election
The 2012 Alberta general election was held on April 23, 2012, to elect members of the 28th Legislative Assembly of Alberta. A Senate nominee election was called for the same day. During the 2011 Progressive Conservative Association leadership election, eventual winner Alison Redford stated that if she became Premier she intended to pass legislation setting a fixed election date. After taking office, her government introduced a bill relating to the timing of elections, which was passed on December 6, 2011. Unlike other fixed election date legislation in Canada, the 2011 Election Amendment Act fixes the election to a three-month period, between March 1 and May 31 in the fourth calendar year. 2004 Alberta General Election
The 2004 Alberta general election was held on November 22, 2004 to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. The election was called on October 25, 2004. Premier Ralph Klein decided to go to the polls earlier than the legislated deadline of March 2006. This election was held in conjunction with the 2004 Alberta Senate nominee election. When the election was called, it was expected to be anticlimactic, with Klein cruising to his fourth straight majority, the tenth for his Progressive Conservative Party. Shortly after the drop of the writs, Klein's mother died and all parties suspended their campaigns for several days. After the campaign resumed, Klein avoided making any policy announcements and attended few events.
