Bob Duckworth (speedway Rider)
Robert Francis Duckworth (25 August 1929 – 1 November 2023) was a New Zealand international motorcycle speedway rider. Speedway career Duckworth began riding speedway at Tahuna Park in Dunedin in 1949. He moved to England in 1951 and joined the Belle Vue Aces, but only made four appearances in his first two seasons with the team. In 1953 he rode for the St Austell Gulls in the Southern League. The following year he rejoined Belle Vue in the top tier of British Speedway. The Belle Vue promoter Johnnie Hoskins paid £2.10s for his transfer from St Austell, and gave him the nickname of ‘Fifty Bob’ Duckworth. During his second spell with Belle Vue he progressed to become one of the team's heat leaders. In 1961 he finished in the top ten averages of UK speedway in the Speedway National League despite being injured in early August and unable to ride for the rest of the season. Mossburn
Mossburn is a small town in the northern Southland region of New Zealand. It is situated 113 km south of Queenstown, 59 km east of Te Anau and 100 km north of Invercargill. The town is located in a very scenic area, with the mountains of Fiordland creating a beautiful backdrop, with the West Dome (1,271 m) and Mt Hamilton (1,487 m) being prominent land marks. Bob Andrews (speedway Rider)
Bob Andrews (born 27 October 1935) is a former international speedway rider from England and New Zealand. Speedway career Andrews was a leading rider in the 1960s and reached the final of the Speedway World Championship on four occasions in 1960, 1961, 1962 and 1964. He rode in the top tier of British Speedway from 1956-1970, riding for various clubs. Andrews was capped by England 21 times and Great Britain 12 times. He later emigrated to New Zealand and gained 27 caps for the country and rode the last of his World finals in New Zealand colours. The 1958 Individual Speedway World Championship was the 13th edition of the official World Championship to determine the world champion rider. In the World final New Zealander Barry Briggs successfully defended his title and was unbeaten after five heat wins. Ove Fundin took the silver medal but there was an incident filled ride off for the bronze medal. Aub Lawson won that ride off after both Peter Craven and Ken McKinlay fell, Craven remounted to take fourth place. The 1956 Individual Speedway World Championship was the 11th edition of the official World Championship to determine the world champion rider. The World final was sponsored by the Sunday Dispatch and was televised live. Despite being televised a crowd of 65,000 saw the first Scandinavian winner in 23 year old Ove Fundin from Sweden. In a very competitive World final Peter Craven of England finished one point ahead of three other riders who had to ride off for the silver medal. The defending champion Ronnie Moore won the ride off to claim silver from fellow countryman Barry Briggs and Welshman Eric Williams who both crashed leaving Moore an easy victory, Briggs took third place from Williams who missed out on a medal. Speedway World Championship
The World Championship of Speedway is an international competition between the highest-ranked motorcycle speedway riders of the world, run under the auspices of the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM). The first official championships were held in 1936. Today, this official FIM championship is organised as a series of Speedway Grand Prix events, where points are awarded according to performance in the event and tallied up at the end of each season. However, up to 1994, it was run as a single-night event after qualifying rounds during the season, leading up to a big final of 20 heats, where points were awarded according to riders' heat placings and then tallied up at the end. Before the World Championship received its formal recognition from the ACU and the FIM in 1936, other unofficial Speedway World Championships were staged between 1931 and 1935, in Europe, South America and Australasia. 1960 Speedway World Team Cup was the first edition of the FIM Speedway World Team Cup to determine the team world champions. The final took place in Gothenburg, Sweden. The World Champion title was won by Sweden team (44 pts) who beat England (30 pts), Czechoslovakia (15 pts) and Poland (7 pts). Sweden's reigning World Champion Ove Fundin went through the entire World Team Cup undefeated. This feat would not be matched until Australia's Jason Crump went through the 2001 Speedway World Cup undefeated. To honour Fundin's deeds in 1960, the winners of the current Speedway World Cup (which replaced the Team World Cup in 2001) receive the Ove Fundin Trophy.
