Blooming Lotus English School
The Blooming Lotus English School is a school for Bhutanese refugees at the Goldhap refugee camp in Nepal. The school was founded in August 1992, and educates its students in three different languages: English is the language of instruction, whereas Dzongkha is taught from grades 3 to 8 and Nepali is taught 40 minutes a day from pre-primary classes to grade 10. The Blooming Lotus English School provides a curriculum including English (all grades); mathematics (optional and compulsory courses); science; history and civics (world history); accounts; social studies; values education; Dzongkha (grades 3 to 8); Nepali; education; economics; and health, population and environment. In addition, the school instructs soccer, basketball, volleyball, karate, gymnastics, and marathon. In 2010, Blooming Lotus hosted an art exhibition by the Institute of Fine Art and Commercial Art-Bhutan (IFACA), the themes of which included the experiences and conditions of Bhutanese refugees. Bhutanese Refugees
Bhutanese refugees are Lhotshampas ("southerners"), a group of Nepali language-speaking Bhutanese people. These refugees registered in refugee camps in eastern Nepal during the 1990s as Bhutanese citizens deported from Bhutan during the protest against oppressive measures of Bhutanese government by some of the Lhotshampas demanding human rights and democracy in Bhutan. As Nepal and Bhutan have yet to implement an agreement on repatriation, many Bhutanese refugees have since resettled to North America, Oceania and Europe under the auspices of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Many Lhotshampa also migrated to areas of West Bengal and Assam in India independently of the UNHCR. Goldhap Refugee Camp
Goldhap refugee camp ( Nepali: गोलधाप शरणार्थी शिविर; ''Goldhāp śaraṇārthī śivira'') is a small refugee camp in Nepal populated by just over 4,600 Bhutanese refugees as of 2011. Because of its dwindling population, the UNHCR merged Goldhap into the nearby Beldangi refugee camps. The camp is located near the settlement of Goldhap, along the Thulo Bato Road, directly abutting the Charali Jungle in Jhapa. Inhabitants Goldhap is the smallest of the seven Bhutanese refugee camps in Nepal. Its 2002 population was about 9,000, which fell by 2011 to just over 4,600 thanks to third-country resettlement. Perkins School for the Blind, in Watertown, Massachusetts, was founded in 1829 and is the oldest school for the blind in the United States. Perkins Brailler
The Perkins Brailler is a "braille typewriter" with a key corresponding to each of the six dots of the braille code, a space key, a backspace key, and a line space key. Like a manual typewriter, it has two side knobs to advance paper through the machine and a carriage return lever above the keys. The rollers that hold and advance the paper have grooves designed to avoid crushing the raised dots the brailler creates. Although braille notation was designed for people who are blind or visually impaired to read, prior to the introduction of the Perkins Brailler, writing braille was a cumbersome process. Refugees In Nepal
Nepal is home to 40,490 refugees officially recognized by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Indian, Tibetan and Bhutanese refugees account for a large majority of Nepal’s refugee population. Refugees from Bhutan In the early 1990s, close to 106,000 Bhutanese refugees settled in seven U.N. supervised camps in eastern Nepal after being evicted from their homes in Bhutan when the government introduced a new law removing citizenship and civil rights due to ancestry.
