Black River (Lake Memphremagog)
The Black River is a tributary of Lake Memphremagog, over long, in northern Vermont in the United States. It is one of the four major rivers in Orleans County. It is the longer but least powerful of the two rivers contained solely within the county.The other being the Barton River There are no longer any damsites. It is paralleled much of the way by Vermont Route 14, taking advantage of the terrain of the Black River Valley. Coventry is the primary village and a census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Coventry, Orleans County, Vermont, United States. As of the 2020 census, it had a population of 111, out of 1,100 in the entire town of Coventry. The CDP is in north-central Orleans County, along the southern edge of the town of Coventry. It is bordered to the south by the town of Irasburg. U.S. Route 5 runs along the eastern edge of the community, leading north to Newport and southeast the same distance to Orleans. United States Route 5
U.S. Route 5 (US 5) is a north–south United States highway running through the New England states of Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont. Significant cities along the route include New Haven, Connecticut; Hartford, Connecticut; and Springfield, Massachusetts. From Hartford northward to St. Johnsbury, Vermont, the road closely follows the route of the Connecticut River. The entire route of US 5 is closely paralleled by Interstate 91. Coventry is a town in Orleans County, Vermont, United States. The population was 1,100 at the 2020 census. History Etymology Coventry was named for the birthplace of one of the founders, Major Elias Buel, who was born in Coventry, Connecticut. Post bellum A record exists from 1860, showing that the "Artillery Company" of the 3rd Regiment mustered for annual drill on June 5. An inventory shows they possessed one six pound brass cannon. Irasburg is a town in Orleans County, Vermont, United States. Irasburg was established in 1781 when the land was granted to Ira Allen, Roger Enos, Jerusha Enos (wife of Roger Enos), Jerusha Enos, Jr. (wife of Ira Allen), Roger Enos, Jr. and others by the Vermont General Assembly.
